That's all well and good if the shaft is brand new. What about when the joints need to be replaced?

yes... you can get heavy duty U-joints for the drive shaft but the diameter of the bearing casings are the same.

Disclaimer: Unless they've chaged somethign since I installed mine. I've had the same shaft and U-joints in for a few years now.

The reason i am asking is i am getting a shudder while letting of the gas in 3rd gear. Feels like the rear end is shaking. It is only while in 3rd gear and while off the gas. At no other time do i get the shudder.

Many people i have talked to told me they had the same symptoms and turned out to be the ujoint.

well reach under your car and check to see if you have any play in your DS. Side to side, back and forth..it should narrow things down instead of guessing.

What he's trying to say is that you need to start eliminating possibilities until you find the problem. Just because it only happens in third hear does not eliminate the possibilty that's it's a bad joint. It may be that when you let off the gas in third that the speed of the driveshaft is just right for you get a harmonic vibration. Climb under the car, put both hand onthe driveshaft and tug and pull and see if you have any play in any direction. If the bolts are tight there shouldn't be any. If you get play then that indicated there's a U-joint problem. If there's no play then you could still have a dry bearing in one of the joints but it's easiest to check for slop first.
