Hey folks, I've driven my '66 for the last 12 years and I'm ready for something a "little" newer and easier on gas. I came across an '88 vert with about 80,000 mi. I just had a quick look over, but haven't driven it yet. All I know is that the body is very straight with only minor chips and dings. The floors have a little surface rust, and the interior hasn't faded much at all. The cons are that the top and weather stripping, and exhaust are shot. For some unexplained reason, it's missing both front turn signal lights and a piece of rubber trim in front of the drivers front wheel. There's no cruise, AC, power windows, etc. and it's an automatic. I've heard the car run. It fired right up and idled smoothe. I nearly laughed when the forsale sign said $1,800 obo. Is that really what these go for? What price should I be looking at? And while we're at it, what are some other trouble spots I should for or barter with?

Thanks folks!

$1800 is easily double what it's worth IMO. However, if it does run, it will run for a long time assuming you take care of it. Only trouble spot would be the automatic transmission, it's a ticking time bomb.

put 1200 cash in his face and he'll bite. I am not sure if you are aware of the price of a new top and weather stripping though. A new top installed is going to run you at least 600 and all the different weather seals you are going to need will run another 3-500 depending on where you shop. unless you want another project I would think twice about this one.

The project part doesn't bother me, I'm looking for a daily driver to tinker with. I was considering offering about 900 to begin with and going from there. Even if I put a grand in it, it would still be an over all cheap driver. Is a top something that can be put on at home, or does it take pro?

I did the exact same thing a couple of months ago. I saw a 93 vert for $1k, but there was no way that it was worth that much with all the damage it had. I offered him 400 and he took it. O got it b/c my truck is drinking about 85 a week in gas and I wanted a toy to tinker with on the weekends. there are plenty of people here that have done it at home. they say if you take your time you can do it, it's just a PITA. I actually have my new top in my closet, I am just waiting for a chance to put it on. When I get it on I will post pics of the install.
