Need advice on a seized engine

A neighbor of mine just bought an '00 GT. He noticed I had a Mustang, so he came over to ask my advice on a problem.

He said he had noticed some slight clicking noises from the engine, and as most 4.6's go, I didn't think much of it but didnt have a chance to check it out. Today he came over and I had a chance to look at it.

The engine itself seems to be seized completely. When you try to start it, you hear a clunk from the starter and nothing else. I tried to turn the crankshaft over by breaker bar and it will not budge. He had mentioned that the intake was replaced a few weeks earlier, but never mentioned why. My best guess is that he had an intake leak, and it caused antifreeze to seep into a cylinder and hydrolock it.

He had stated that he was driving it and it just stopped suddently. He said he tried to start it again while it was rolling by letting the clutch out but nothing would happen. If something did indeed stop the engine from spinning, it would have caused the rear tires to lock up, correct? He never mentioned anything about that so that's what makes me think it may not be something physically wrong (valvetrain/crank/rod..etc).

Any suggestions on what I can try? I told him to try pulling the sparkplugs and see if there's anything on them or if maybe he can try cranking it after that. Other then that, it seems like there's nothing more you can do other then pulling the oil pan or even the valve covers (i would think you'd still get a few degrees of turn on the crankshaft due to the links in the timing chain if it were valvetrain related)

Thanks guys... im a 5.0 guy myself, but i'd love to see him get his car running again so thats why im asking here for mod motor advice.

Also, is there a difference between a 96-98 intake, and a 99-04 intake? I noticed that his intake has an aluminum crossover in the front, and an '01GT I looked at did not. Also he stated that the alternator bracket on the top will not bolt back on after swapping intakes. Im wondering if there was a slight port dimension difference that could cause an intake leak and possibly lead to this problem.

I'm really wondering if he put the wrong intake on. I'm not 100% sure where the alternator bracket on a non pi intake is, but I would imagine that it would be in the same location. Ford did not add the aluminum crossover until I believe 02'. I'm stuck with the plastic one:nonono: Even if it was hydrolocked you should still be able to turn the crank, it just probably wont fire up. Good luck, let us know if you find out whats up.

Went back after dinner and he was pulling the spark plugs. #3 was drenched in antifreeze, both in the combustion chamber, as well as on the plug base itself.

It looks like whoever installed the intake may have torqued it too much and caused a pin hole crack on the outside base, and possibly smashed or tore the intake gasket. I wont know that until it comes off though.

As far as the intake, he said the friend that put it on for him said it came from a newer GT. I'm not the most knowledgeable about 4.6's, but it was definitely not the plastic crossover version.

As far as it running... we pulled all the plugs and tried to turn it over by both starter and by hand (all he had was a 3/8" breaker bar) but it still did not budge. The starter just clicks (not a low battery constant click, just a straight click and all the lights dim).

I'm wondering if it was so severely hydro locked that it could have bent a connecting rod or something of that nature. It just seems strange that it seems to be frozen in place still. Im not sure how much pressure he put on the breaker bar to try to free it, but it's not my car and I didn't volunteer. He said he's had problems with it lately not wanting to start and then suddenly it would.. so it seems like this had been going on for awhile.. but he never noticed any white smoke at all.

He said he's going to talk to the guy who installed the intake and I explained to him what happened and possibly why it happened. Hopefully he can get it all straightened out... I'm still at a bit loss as to why it's still frozen in place though. Maybe a shot of WD-40 would help out.. not sure.

If the cylinder got flooded with coolant he could have easily bent up a rod.

If you pulled all the plugs and tried to turn it over, a hydrolocked motor will normally shoot all of the water out if it isnt literally locked.

Sounds like it ingested alot of coolant and decided to bend some metal up. I hope not though, keep us posted.
