Need Advice On Replacing Desktop Computer

PSU fan, add another, total- 8. I'm waiting for my PC to fly away.

I like the case 85_SS has, I may upgrade to that.

Here is my R9 280X - AMD 7970 OverClock Edition Graphics Card. It's 12.2 Inches long and barley fit in my case.

It's a really nice case. My only complaint is that it doesn't have any kind of filter system for all the fans, but interestingly enough it stays pretty dust free inside because air never stops moving for it to collect. Dust will still collect on flat surfaces that fans blow against, on wires and such. I did the best I could at hiding all the wires around the back side of the case so none of them are exposed inside and I think that helped a LOT with airflow. One of my favorite things about this build was the Corsair PSU...that thing is extremely nice, even came in a velvet bag

Not in a million years! Sure, Microsoft OSs have their faults but nothing quite like running yesterday's CPU, and a bloated OS, while having difficulty with compatibility (hardware and software) and possibly having to install Microsoft Office over the TOP of the Apple OS to boot... All while paying a PREMIUM to be told what you can and cannot do by the Apple Store.

Thank You,

So, for example, the i7 is last generation?

There is a premium no doubt, but in my experience it is worth it. I'm glad I made the switch back in college.

Those things remind me so much of the early Apple computers. Apple doesn't make computers for computer people, they make appliances for housewives. Those things are basically big iPhones that run a monitor.

OK well this thread devolved.

Sorry...

Back to topic...

I keep trying to build on a budget, but every time I get one put together, it ends up looking like this:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/nzwfFT

Damn near $1000 already, and I haven't even decided whether or not to add a sound card and a BluRay drive yet.

I can save a bit by giving up the Crossfire compatibility, and even more by using my existing BFGTech power supply (but it's six or seven years old), and going with a slower hard drive... but still...

Where should I "trim the fat" (in yall's opinion)?

Hdd. Why in god's hell are you getting a 10k rpm drive. What's this right for? Gaming?
Because I use it for gaming, my MASSIVE music library collection, etc... You're right though, it's probably overkill.

If I strip it down to this:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4TGzFT

That re-uses my existing power supply, one of my two hard drives, gets rid of the second video card, adds a BluRay drive, and gets rid of the liquid cooled CPU cooler (that AMD CPU includes a cooler, and I've had pretty good luck with their included coolers over the years when not overclocking their processors). That brings it down to $508.16 and lets me get what I need with the option to add the second video card later. I could also always add the liquid CPU cooler later should the stock AMD fan prove inadequate or if I want to start playing with settings.

I'll be looking more into this all after i get back from vacation sometime in July. My main use will be just dimple computing needs, ie wifey veiwing her pics and crap like that. Dont need anything hardcore like you gamers! Budget will be about 500, but will need a windows install as well. Ya'll migrated to win8 or whats the preferred os right now? I still rock xp pro on my acer i5 chip laptop.

Search craigslist for a newer one thats cheap but upgradeable. Find a basic with a decent motherboard and processor, most come with 4gb of ram which will suffice. It's also easy to find a pretty solid graphics card for less than half of what they market for.
Bottom line comes down to whats available in your time frame. 90% chance you can find a mildly upgraded one for 300-400.
