I have narrowed it down that I am going to be getting Thumper Heads since it is the best bang for the buck. Now here is my dilemma, the head and cam combo comes with a TFS1 cam and timing chain and gear set. The only thing is, should I get just the heads and a different cam. Such as a Crane, Steeda, and Lunati. I have heard to stay away from the ford cams and that is something I will do.

Any input would be great

Thanks for reading,
Dan

You should be ok with the tfs1 cam you may get some idle issues at cold start up. At the most it would be between the tfs1 or the steeda 19.

FWIW- with the gt40's in stock form the tfs1 cam and a tmoss stock ported lower I ran a 13.5 @102mph with a 2.2-2.3 60ft, I avg. around a 2.0, the first and only time I took that combo to the track.

Hey Dan

I got some general thoughts about oem iron heads.

Not fair to compare them to TFS, Edels, AFR or other heads that have been the recipient of newer technology.

Its all about how the newer heads are made which makes them so much more efficient than the oem heads.

The fact that the newer heads are Aluminum does not have a lot to do with what I'm trying to get across here as well.

Bottom line is this thought, I guess ................

Newer heads are more efficient thus they flow more air

Just plain old horse sense tells me cams like Ford alphabet or others from the days of old when there were no or very little choices in heads other than oem need to be looked upon differently than cams of these days which have also benefitted from newer technology.

Back in the older days it was a common practice to use the cam to crutch or make up for the short commings of port design with the older oem iron heads.

Now here is where I'm trying to go with a thought and I wonder if consideration of that thought is even worthy

Since you are gonna be using some ported oem heads ......

Would the TFS cam which is made for a totally different kind of head be all that wise of choice with your combo

Just thinking out loud
and
Considering I used a hired gun to kill my cam issues

I don't claim to know a great deal about cams other than general info.

If you can supply a few examples in the way of dyno pulls with the combo you are considering, I may be able to do a comparison to a different combo which might give some insite or reference point ... if you will.

Thumper likes the alphabet cams - he advises to install them advanced. Talk to Mike.........
