ok 2night i went to my friends hous the car did fine went to cranck it to move it and nuthing would happen. i poped the hood and grabed the positive wire and sparks jumped with the key off.i tightened the positive side down some and the negative side started trowing sparks then a couple seconds later i see sparks from under the car from were i think the negative cable ataches to the block then i move the negative again and the car tryes to start and run me and my friend over while no one was in it the key was off and the clutch was not even pushed in. then i saw smoke come from the starter sylinoid and the positive wire sarted melting so i grabed a wrinch while my friend got in to hold the break so it would not run me over and i riped the positive wire off the battery. i got in the car and checked the power relay and it was melted again but this time i could not get it off it was like it was welded shut ive had a problem with that for ahile but its never done this before. if anyone has and idea to what i could do i could use it because im about to start looking for a new car or something because i dont want to replace the wiring harnise which i do have one out of my convertable will that work in a hatch? it should shouldent it also sorry for the bad typing

It sounds like your positive cable to the starter was grounding out. The positive cable is strapped to the engine via an insulated bracket in a couple different spots. On a 15+ year old car stuff get's brittle. I would replace all of the cables for peace of mind.

I had another thought as well. I got called out to a friend's house one time to work on a 2.3 Ranger that fried a bunch of electrical stuff. Turns out when they changed the starter (original problem) the little connection at the end of the positive wire at the starter had bent and was grounding at the starter. Took a pry bar and moved it a bit and all was fixed.

agreed...

the main power cables get old and older cars have a tendancy of the wires doing some weird stuff. Replace em. I think 30$ will replace em all. after that it is finding a short within the main harness, but it does sound like it is one of the power feeds.

like he said!!
