Need help bad

I have a 96 v6 automatic and it decided it didn't want to go any further yesterday. I was driving into town on the highway and I went to accelerate and all I heard was a grinding noise each time I hit the gas so I just coasted and got on to the axis road shut it down waited a second and tried to start it back up and the starter just spun so I didn't try it again called someone towed it to the house put it on ramps motor and trans are not seized up any ideas what it could be

Does it still make grinding noise when you crank it?
Maybe the flywheel broke?

It def sounds as if it is not currently located in the desired position. He said "auto" so broken flexplate. Maybe a seized converter kicked the whole thing off.

I have seen flexplates with the centers ripped out in both applications lol

Yes that is true NORMALLY. But what would you think the expected action would be IF the center section were to come apart from the outer section? The starter would turn the outer gear ring but the motor crank shaft would never turn.
