Hey guys. I can't get the main caps off of my crank. We have the whole engine disassembled down to literally the block and crank but we can't get the main caps off. There must be a trick. We have removed all of the bolts on top and on the side. Are there Jack bolts in there somewhere? Do we need an Allen key of some kind? Those main caps will not budge. Please help if you can. Thanks!!

You '96 block as far as I remember is a Windsor and as such, should have dowels if I'm not mistaken. Only Romeo engines have jack screws. I'll be damned if I know how they come apart though. Sorry, I'd love to give you some first hand knowledge on this one, but my Cougar engine was a Romeo. :D

EDIT
I may, or may not be wrong about your enging being a Windor. What's the casting number of your block? That should tell us for sure.

These are the differences....

Most mustang engines are Romeos, mine is, and they are jack screws. It's really wierd. The reason I couldn't figured out how to get them out is because the first main cap is different than the rest. The first one is a 7mm while the other 4 are 8mm. All I have is set of hex keys that has a 6mm and an 8mm. So i just tried the first cap last night and nothing fit. I tried the second main tonight with the 8mm and it worked. Same with the 3, 4, and 5 caps. I just need a 7mm for that first one now it seems. I can't get the 5th one out yet but the jack screws are open, just feels tight or there's something else I'm missing. I'll get a 7mm and give 1 a shot tomorrow. I need to get this block down to the machine shop asap. I want to get her back on the street for spring!!

once you get all the jackscrews including cap #1 loosened then you will be able to unseat the thrust bearing and pull out the 5th one.

glad you figured out what fastners they are. i was trying to remember but it's been about 5 years since i have seen one apart. i was going to say they were torx heads ?
