Need help identifying something under the car.

Ok, well I was under the car today installing my alum. ds, when i started wondering what something was. My camera broke, so ima have to describe it:

It is in the rear, driver side, right next to the gas tank, above the exhaust pipes, but before the exhaust tips. Its about 1 foot long and is covered on the bottom by a shield, theres lines going out from it, but didnt really check where they went to. Anyone know what it is?
