Well i posted a few days ago about my car making some wierd noises and vibrateing and you all suggested that it might have been the harmonic balancer. So i replaced it today and definately tought that would be the problem. The old balancer rubber was cracked.

I got it done and low and behold it is still making the same noise a quick clacking sound when taking off from a start and it turns into a tick, tick, tick sound that picks up w/ speed as i go throught 1st and 2nd usually(it's a 5-speed) By then it goes away or is inaudible. Then the next thing that happens is that it starts vibrating at exactly 55mph and gradually goes away as it goes faster, there is a slight vibration as i go faster then 55 but hardly noticeable mostly if i leave my hand on the shifter. Now if i let off the gas at anything higher then 55 and coast it, I'll hear a slight drone/humm like sound that lasts only a few seconds and goes away and as it starts slowing down it will start vibratin as it gets down to 55 mph again. NOw this vibration seems speed related as it happens at 55mph not rpm related as when shifting throught the gears it seems fine.

The drivers side motor mount did seem bad. The little nub w/ the dished washer that hangs down was all cracked and loose, don't hoow the rest of the mount might look like. PLease help me out guys, trying to get this annoyance fixed, this is my daily driver. Thank you in advance.

One or more of your wheels could have thrown a weight and become imbalanced. That would cause a vibration at varying speeds.

I have to agree with 795.0 pacecar on this one. When was the last time you had your wheels and tires balanced? You might also think about getting your driveshaft rebalanced.

Did the car lose any power? Did you whack any potholes really hard? How many miles?

It could possible be your motor mounts or tranny mount since your said you can feel it through your shifter.

Check your tires like they mentioned and u-joints.

You guys think it might be that. What about the clanking noise it makes when taking off from a stand still and the ticking sound? Thanks guys

How do you get a drive shaft rebalanced what is done to do this?

I dont know if this would be the problem. I had the same problem just a month ago with my car I just bought. I installed a new flex plate and the issue went away. Also years ago I had a mustang that did that same thing and it was the input shaft on the transmission. So maybe tranny or flexplate.

No power loss, it still seems to pick up pretty good. Some punk in a turbo p/t cruiser tried to race me as i was test driving the car tonite passed him right up in 3rd Any ways a couple weeks ago i did run over a 2x4 on the freeway and it did whack something underneath but everything seemed fine after ward. It has 213,00 miles on it any one have a pic of stock mounted driveshaft in good shape. the passneger side motor mount looks a little worn as i mentioned before.

What do worn out u-joints look like?

For the u-joints just crawl under your car and try to move your driveshaft. If there's any movement you have bad u-joints.

I'm not really sure how they balance a driveshaft but my guess would be the put it on a lathe and spin it really fast. Try the local rear-end shops they can probably help you with that.

I would look more into the motor mounts. If you do the motor mounts get a tranny mount also.

For the tick tick tick, heres something stupid to check...mine made a similar noise, it turned out to be the way the center caps were aligned, if you have any. Try taking them off for a while.

Sounds like either a bad u-joint or possibly a bad TOB.

I'm sorry i'm slipping whats a TOB.

The clanking noise sounds like somethinkg is lose and hits metal on metal. Not to loud , the sound level varies on take off but doesn't last long. It isn't the center caps, it's a different kind of tick tick. LOL Thanks for the input guys please keep them coming.

Put me down with the bad U-Joints. Speed dependant and causes harmonic at certain speeds that vibrate through the shifter sounds like classic u-joint.

No need to get the drive-shaft balanced. They don't just one day decide to be heavy on one side.

I seem to recall that before you heard noises coming from the crank area at idle, even with the serp belt removed (while the car was stationary). Did the new balancer take care of that at least?

If so, it seems you simply had two different issues going on. If not, repost those crank area symptoms so the guys can consider those noises too.

Does the DS have any score marks on it?

Good luck.

I agree sounds like a throw out bearing. But where does the sound seem the loudest? under the car? under the hood? It could also be the transmition mount is wearing out and putting stress on the u-joints.

Have not checked the drive shaft yet will check it tommarow.yes you are right there was a rattling noise coming from the fron tof the engine some where around the crank/accessories area. Well now that i replaced the balancer it seems to have died down some, not that noticeable but there some noise still keep in mind my fan isn't in the best of shape.

Well the vibration is noticeable on the shifter and i can feel in the seat of my pants when around 55mph.

are the u-joints hard to replace?

To answer your question the noise(ticking sound/screehing) echos when i drive through a resonant area IE. street w/ walls on both sides I would guess that the sound would emanate more from the bottom of the car to echo like this.

To be honest i would say if the ticking sound was the only noise it made, i would think it would be an exhaust leak. But it starts w/ the clanking metal on metal noise followed by the ticking and screeching sound intermittently as i pick up speed from a complete stop. The screeching becomes more prominent as the car gets hot from driving around. At higher speed the symptom is the vibration.. Thanks again guys.

For ticking, there's no chance the fan is hitting the shroud slightly, is there? As motor mounts die, they allow the motor to droop, ergo the fan hits the shroud. That can make some weird noise and vibes, as well as beat the tar out of water pump bearings.

None of us can pinpoint any of this from a puter - we just toss out everything we can think of in case it happens to be something you forgot to check.

Good luck.

Yes thanks , and i appreciate it very much i know it's up to me to pin point. I don't trust mechanics worth a damn. Hope it's not something ill have to take it to one to get fixed. Replacing those worn motor mounts is next on my list.

-Thank you all
