ok i just bought a 1991 mustang lx(hatch)..it has work done to it but not exactly sure what...

i know it is lowered and has AFR heads,CAI.and exhaust...here's the problem me being the dumb ass that i am, i went to wash my car and i sprayed the engine compartment(engine not on) i turned the car on after i washed it and it idled up to about 2200 when it normally idled at about 1000...i turned it of instantly....i removed the cap off the distributor and it had water in it not a lot but it had some in it...i dried it off with a rag and reinstalled it...the car turned on and idled normally...i went to drive it home, took off normal in first but when i shifted to 2nd the car hesitated i gave it some gas and it sputtered i put it in 3rd and it worked fine at low Rpm...i stopped to check what was wrong at the car was idling back a 2200...when i took off again it didn't want to go it wanted to die..i shifted to second and i heard my exhaust popping and the car was backfiring..ok i replaced cap, rotor, wires, and plugs...didn't do anything to it.now the car is idling lower that normal and it wants to die....any idea on what the problem is???....sorry for the long post......

Remove the distributor cap, dry it off good. Then spray the inside and outside of the cap and spark plug wires with WD-40. Water often condenses on the ignition parts after the engine shuts down.

If you still have idle problems after the WD-40 treatment, see the "Surging Idle Checklist for help with all your idle/stall problems. Everything you need to find and fix idle problems is in there.

The first two posts contain all the updates to the fixes. At last count there were 24 possible causes and fixes for surging idle/stall problems. I continue to update it as more people post fixes or ask questions.
