So my 96 will fire right up, but before it gets down to idle speed it shuts off. I can give it gas, but it just shuts off after a few seconds every time. The engine is completely stock, the tank has gas, the fuel pressure is where it should be, etc. I spent the better part of a day checking out the fuel system.
I was thinking it could be the MAF sensor because a friend had the same problem on his probe, and if the computer cant tell how much air is coming in...blah blah. That, or other computer issues. I'm poor since I just got new wheels and tires, so I can't take it anywhere. Can anybody offer any advice?

Thanks!

Well, that's not as much as the MAF, so thats cool...
Is there a way to make sure this is my problem before I replace the IAC?
Is this a normal problem for a 96 with only 52k miles?

Thanks for the help!

yeah alot of people have the same problem. Mine went last year at 70k miles. The only thing I can think of is to take one off a friends car and see if it works or just return the part if it doesnt do it. It is a really simple swap.

I believe they are like $46 (from some site on the net.. i had to purchase one)

Do a search on the IAC valve, and on one of the posts, it'll have a link

I fixed my IAC problem simply by cleaning it with carb cleaner. I'd recommend you try that before buying any new parts.

Its definately the IAC Id say. You can get one from napa for like 60 bucks I think. If you get it from Ford it will be around $100
Cleaning only helps short term, after you clean it, it will more than likely foul in another couple of months.
Mine went through 2 IACs before I had 10,000 miles on my car. First one was bad from Ford, second one was out of spec from Ford, third one was the charm

Yeah, I would try cleaning it.. if it fixes the problem, then you know.. that you have about 2 months to buy a new one.. cause the problem will come back after time!!

Also I would check for any disconnected hoses, vacumn lines.. I had the problem a few months back and it came down to a PCV valve was not connected on the passanger side valve cover..

So I took off the IAC and I don't really see a way to dismantle it. Do I just spray some carb cleaner "in the hole?"

Thanks for the help!

Well, that makes 5 people who have had the same problem and all fixed it one of two ways. Good enough for me! Tomorrow I will try some carb cleaner. If that doesn't work, it's off the the auto parts store.

Thanks everybody.
Hope this is the fix.

Replace the IAC. It's about $85 from Ford. Cleaning may help temporarily.
