Does anyone have any suggestions on fixing a stripped crank snout without taking the crank to a machine shop? It is stripped on the first half inch of the threads? Somebody has had to of had this problem before me...
i have seen this before there is a few ways to fix this
1 you could get a bolt that threads all the way down in the crank
2 you could drill and tap it to the next bigger size either metric or standard but make sure it is straight
3 you could weld the inside of the crank to the damper but it has to be done slow because it needs to cool between the small welds so you dont burn up the front seal and yes i have seen this done
They sell a repair kit that allows you to fix the snout in the car, try your local auto parts store. They will most likely have to order it in.... Ive seen it used and it works perfect.
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT WELD THE CRANK, THATS THE STUPIDEST ADVICE EVER MENTIONED. If you weld it you will have to cut the timing cover apart to get the crank back out, and once you have done that and your cranks removed throw it in the trash because its no good. Your best bet is first try to find a tap and do that first, usually a fresh tap will center itself and fall right in line with the old threads. I wouldnt suggest drilling it because it is forged and is insanely hard. It will be very difficult to drill and retap even if you can find a suitable new bolt. If tapping doesnt work, Id recommend sucking it up and letting a machine shop do it right. HOW did it get stripped????
Very close, and good guess! It's spelled "Heli-Coil". But, that's a generic name. There are a couple of systems out there. Also, I'm not sure if a heli-coil is rated to that high of a torque. It should be. But, like I said, *I* am not sure off-hand.
