Need help, whinning rear-end

Hey guys, my car is making a funny whinning sound from the rear end that seems to get louder the longer I drive. It does it any time the car is in motion, whether its in gear or not. It even does it when the engine is off and the car is just rolling (I've tested this). It sounds like its coming from the rear end. I recently had a pinion seal replace because of a leak, so I doubt it's the differential. It sucks because I'm out of town in Cincinnati right now and after 4 hours of driving the whine was pretty loud. It seems to go away after the car cools back down again, but I haven't driven since I got into cinci. Anyone have a clue what it might be?

Maybe they forgot to fill it up with gear oil Wouldn't be the first time

I doubt they did that because the pinion seal with replaced back in June. If it had no oil my rear end would probably be destroyed by now. ANYONE know what this is?

Just a thought, but could it be your electric fuel pump acting up???

Could it be your axle bearings? One of mine was bad and it was pretty noisy.
My Dad, an ex mechanic knew what it was immediately. Since I was going to have to pull the axels I figured that was a good time to swap a new 4.10 in for the rear. Best thing I could have done, plus got the bearings replaced too.

pinion bearings, carrier bearings, axle bearings...its a bearing gone or going bad in the rear end or maybe its a wheel bearing. Thing is ....yeah sure you can have a mechanic replace the faulty bearing but can they tell you why it went in the first place and correct it so it doesnt happen again?

Ok so now im starting to worry that my rear-end is going out all together. I don't know because like I said the whinning sound is there any time the rear wheels are in motion, whether the engine is running or not. What do you guys think? Should i expect the worst? I just bought my PI parts and I really don't need a big problem like this because I'm trying to save for the swap. If my rear-end is going out completely, how much will it be to have it repaired?
