I finished up my carpet install today and in the process may have knocked something loose related to the transmission. The car was shifting fine before I removed the shifter a few days ago but now when I put it in drive it won't shift it's self into 3rd gear.
Actually, I can manually shift it from 1st to 2nd but then when I shift to D it stays in 2nd. If I leave from a stop it will not shift out of first unless I manually shift it.
I can hear a whine when at moderate rpms so I am assuming that trans fluid pressure is high or there is a vac leak. I was told by a friend that if the trans is not getting a vac signal that it will not let it shift into high gear, is there any truth to this?
I made sure the shifter is adjusted properly, I assume if it was misaligned and sticking between gears the car would not move. I only took it around the block a few times slowly so I don;t think that could have screwed it up even if it was misaligned at first.
I had to cut then reconnect the wires coming from the shifter housing, is it possible the neutral safety switch could play some part in this?
Any help on this subject is greatly appreciated.
