Alot of times you can just take the tranny in to a Trans shop and have it bench built. That way you save on R/R on the tranny which is usually $600 or so. I have a Ford training manual for the T-5 with pics and everything. Unfortunatly I bought it from ebay and it is not in electronic form. I plan to use the manual to install a new 2-3 synchro in my 93 Cobra once I get the tranny out. I need to replace the clutch and bearing retainer soon.

Grinding in reverse means you'll need a new 1-2 synchro sleeve.

Grinding into 2nd means you'll possibly need a new 2nd gear.

All that is in addition to a basic rebuild.

You are looking at about $300 in parts.

Do it yourself, it's a peice of cake.

i may thake it out and give it a whack. or i may find one that is trash and rebuild it slowly, this is muh daily driver so i am kinda pressed for time on a rebuild.i have seen trashed ones goin for round 100 bucks or so. can u upgrade a std.t-5 to a WC t-5???

lol the grinding into second would be the synchro wouldnt it?

me and my dad just rebuilt my t-5 and it was a piece of cake... just lay out everything exactly as it came off and u cant go wrong.. also set aside a good 4-5 hours to do it all, so that u dont have to come back another day and possibly forget things

the grinding into reverse i had as well, but im hoping that was fixed somewhere along the lines... im pretty sure that was my tob tho cuz it was pretty bad

anyway.... good luck

Def do it urself...really easy...like was said if u can take it out u can rebuild it. Grinding in 2nd usually means the syncro teeth on the actual second gear are ground up and the 2nd gear will need replacement(about $90 i think)

In the beginning it is, but after some time of grinding a gear, it begins to physically damage the gears dog teeth and you'll need to replace the gear.

The synchro simply grabs the gear and slows it down or speeds it up. When they wear down, their ability to grab decreases and you get the grind and the two parts try to mesh at different speeds.

85+ 5.0 T-5's are already world class. You need to order parts for a WC T-5 since that's what you already have.

Lots of people mistake World Class for the Z-spec T-5.

The majority of T-5's are world class. Only early 83-84 V8 and some early 4-banger models were standard.

See http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/onlineorder/product.asp to download a FREE service manual for T5 or Tremec 3550
You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

See http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ or http://www.ddperformance.com for parts

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

http://cartapes.com also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

damn i never knew about that WC thing, always thought i had a standard t5... well the junkyard one which i only used the intermittent shaft off of and the housing (not tail housing) was an 85 and mine was an 87 so they worked together

ok sorry i thought u meant the actual second gear was gonna be screwed, which i thought was a little fishy because its always in contact with its driving gear... but then again the dog teeth are on the same part so ud need to replace the whole thing hehehe my mistake

anyway.... my rebuild kit was 199 shipped from ddperformance... they raised price to 189 and $10 shipping

i also needed a new input shaft cuz my teeth were worn and junkyard bearing race was screwed... cost 99 plus 9 shipping.... 697 from ford hehehe

rebuild was cake, just make sure u get the right preload on the bearings cuz it can be tricky to get the one u want, hard to explain but u want minimal resistance to turning but no axial movement of the shafts

uhh... can anyone tell me whether my reverse will still grind? i dont think it will but i didnt replace any of the gears that reverse uses

thanks and good luck quik50
