okay, here is the deal. 88 2.3 5spd, recently replaced the timing belt (timing is right) checked compression (it's all good) and she will start and run but if you try and give it any gass it falls on it's face and wants to die and shoots large amounts of black smoke ou tthe tail pipe. any help is appreciated.

any ideas at all at this point cause i'm gonna blow it up

Large amounts of black smoke, heh, the Batmobile could do that......

As a first guess I'd suspect a blown diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum hose off it and see if there's raw fuel in the line. If it's wet inside, then a new FPR should fix it.....

Bad FPR is a good guess. Also check your computer codes, even if your CEL isn't on.

cool thank you. i will do that as soon as i get a chance. also i have another question, this time i have a 87 2.3 5 spd and i replaced the timing belt but she wont start, pretty sure i did not get a tooth off, (how do you know if you did?) and this one wont start at all also when i try and start it it just cranks away not trying to fire or anything and the schraeder valve on the fuel rail leaks fuel (is this replaceable or just get a new rail?) any ideas? i checked the coil and it runs the same resistance as the other one i have that i know works and it is the same but when i use one of those spark checker things it is showing no spark from the coil any ideas on this one?

On the leaking fuel shrader valve, I've gotten the needle thingy (pintle?) in the center of the valve stuck in the down position after removing a fuel pressure gauge and that made it leak. Take a small screwdriver and CAREFULLY try poking down on the needle and see if you can get it to pop back up fully in its seat. That might stop the leaking. If not, I think those schrader valves unscrew so you can just replace it.

Regarding the no-start, since you're not registering any spark at the coil, just swap the working coil from your '88 onto your '87 temporarily to see if that fixes it.

i tried all of this last night, i got spark (shocked myself with the screwdriver in the spark plug wire trick) but it still wont fire, i can't get it to start though spun the crank and cam to the TDC marks and the rotor is pointed at plug one so i'm pretty sure i got tthe timing on, or at the very least close. please help
