Need hood scoop size

I'm wanting to add a cowl hood scoop to my 88 hatch. Maybe a 2 1/2 incher. What dimensions do i need to fit the factory hood. I know i need to buy a cowl hood but it's christmas and I'm broke!! I want it to look as much like a cowl hood as possible. And what is the best way to bond and work it into the hood to make it look solid. Thanks in advance

why bother? a non functioning cowl hood belongs on a mustang as much as euro lights and a ironing board rear wing....

Unless you are carbed, a cowl induction hood's only function is more clearance, which 95% of mustangs dont need in the first place.

EFI stangs dont utilize the induction design of the hoods.

i understand what you're saying, but the high pressure air at the cowl will cool everything under the hood, even in an efi car. (the OP also didnt say if he was running a carbed or efi engine). of course it doesn't bring the same effect as it would with a carb car. my point was just that a mustang isn't the type of car to put tacky cosmetic alterations on. leave that for the import crowd.

i'm not a fan of the cowl hood to begin with, unless, (like you said) its necessary for clearance.

It is debateable if it will help cool.. Granted you will allow cooler are from the cowl but also lessens the effectiveness of the radiatior which needs the negative pressure to help suck air through it. Also why that stupid plastic thing that scrapes on everything is under the radiator support.

If you want something that will match up easily to your stock hood, look for an early 80's hood scoop, i believe 82 GTs had them IIRC.

who debates this????
fresh air circulating through the engine compartment keeps it cooler. the radiator does not rely on negative pressure. it is designed to use positive pressure from a moving car to PUSH air through the rad, not some sort of vacuum that draws air through it. that is what the "stupid plastic thing that scrapes on everything" under the rad is supposed to aid. it basically adds surface area to the rad, by funneling air into it that would normally bypass the rad. a cowl hood, even on an efi car, will circulate cooler air throughout the engine compartment. that means tb, egr, intake tube, intake manifold, headers etc.
cooler engine air intake= better performance.

If you like the looks of a cowl hood, save money and buy one. There's no way to add a cowl to your existing hood without it looking like total ****. And trust me, a clean factory hood looks better than the total **** you are proposing. Just my two cents.

If there were a gaping hole at the front of our cars that might be the case but if you are trying to get air through what little opening that you do have at the front of the car, your objective to actually cool the motor as opposed to the engine compartment doesn't add up. Yes you will cool the TB, tube and headers but none of it will acutally make the motor run any cooler. In fact you will probably be putting more stress on your cooling system to keep up. The highest pressure on our cars is at the cowl and at the nose of the hood(not much of an opening if you have an LX). I like the look of the Cowl hood but to say it is a performance modification might be a stretch.

If you do an ebay search they sell the cowl inserts for fox bodies. You just bondo it to your hood then snad it down to match. You loose weight savings but you don't gotta deal with changing hood hardware and misallignment. You can also cut out the area of your hood uner the cowl to make it functional. I think they are like $70.
I prefer a real cowl hood, but you can get the look and functionality you want if you go that route.

Thanks dls322 seems like your 2 cents is all that's worth anything. I just want it for looks and my uncle is a killer body man and I seen him do it to a 68 camaro and it looked good. Everyone has their opinion, and i think it'll work. Oh yeah i have a buddy with a cobra r hood but it's got a crack on the front of it where he had a wreck, but he said he would let it go for 75 bucks. Are fiber glass hoods ok to fix. It's only like a 1 inch split kinda right on the front lip next to the headlight. It ripped out the latch bolts but thats ok cause i can use pins.

SuperStroke17......I'd definatly pick up the hood for $75, especially since you know a body guy. I never repaired fiberglass, but i'm sure it's not super hard and 1" isn't much at all. Then drive it around till you can afford to get her painted. Mine is still primer gray.

Yeah I believe thats what I'm going to do. It's going on my 88 Im building right now. When it comes out of he paint booth it'll be a nice shiny black and I think that cobra r hood would look badass in black
