need ideas for tapping PI intake

Hey guys, Ive just installed a PI intake on my car. Im having problems finding the correct tap. Oreilly, Autozone, 2 hope depots, and 2 Lowes, no luck. Everybody carries a 3/8 nc, but no 3/8's npt. Im guessing that the threads are different?

Should I keep looking? Or consider placing the sensor in the drain plug, or whereever the 2nd option is? If I go with the 2nd option, where exactly does it go, and do I need to extend the sensor wire? Thanks

go to a plumbing store they have npt taps. thats where i had to go to get mine for the oil drain for my vortech.

Napa has NPT taps around here. The threads are different enough that it won't thread in.

You installed the intake without tapping it for the 2nd sensor? Are you going to remove it again when you tap it?

There is a few places you can place it. Back when the plastic crossover PI intake was available, many tapped the thermostat housing, which doesn't do you any good without the tap or they tapped into a heater hose. With the heater hose, you can get a "T" fitting to put the sensor into.

94 - 98 NPI cars have 2 coolant sensors, 99+ PI cars have 1. You need to add in the 2nd sensor.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Yes TGJ, my last two PI headswaps, both on my 98, we tapped it at the thermostat housing, however, I didnt do it either time, . Unfortunately, I forgot to tap it when I installed it, with this being my first time turning the wrenches. I know I run the risk of getting shavings into the cooling system, but I think it will be ok. We tapped it when the swap was already done on the last motor, and everything was great for 75k that I put on it. Ill proboly just flush the cooling system after we tap it and we will take it very slow.

Just a second... Did you have a NPI intake on this car with the aluminum crossover? Does your PI intake have the aluminum crossover? If so, pull the intake off and change the crossovers...

Just to be clear. I am not talking about the spot beside the thermostat housing that everybody uses now with the aluminum crossover. I am talking about the metal elbow that houses the thermostat.

Now if you use that spot, you likely won't need to extend the wires for that one.

The heater hose is easier because you are cutting into the heater hose and putting a "T" fitting in it. You will need to extend the wires for this one.

I forgot to mention that earlier about the wires.

thanks TGJ, no, I dont have an aluminum crossover on either intake so I cant transfer it. Im hoping to get 6 months out of this intake, then hopefully Ill be going with an svo or bullitt intake.

The other option is to use the drain plug on the back of the block by the drivers side motor mount. Im going to to see if my car has that plug today, and if so, just extend the wire and screw it in.
