Ok,

Im trying to buy a pete jackson gear drive from someone, but he doesnt know if its a noisy gear drive or not. He says the only numbers on the drive are PJ92, the gears are steel, and are straight cut. Does anyone know how to tell if this is a noisy drive or not?

Summit sells PJ gear drives, but doesn't specify which is the "noisy" setup. Try calling Summit? 1 800 230 3030

I vaguely remember that the angle cut is quieter because it meshes more smoothly, or something like that. damn my short memory.

I have the quiet, and it is angle cut, but havent started the motor yet to know just how "quiet" it is. Hopefully not too much so....

Yeah, helical gears are quiet and straight cut are noisy. Most tranny drive gears in new cars are helical and reverse are straight cut thats why reverse is so noisy.

My noisey set never quieted.
They were straight cut.
Snail50: They might not tell outright what they are, but the part numbers for PJ end in either 'C' or 'CN'...
C is quiet
CN is noisey

If I wasn't up for the noise, I wouldn't even get a gear. They don't really benefit anything on a street car other than that purty sound they make.
