Hi all, new here, hope some of you can help me out.

I don't have a mustang.... but do have a something with a ford motor in it.
This past spring I bought a Mastercraft boat with an indmar engine in it, which is what I understand to be a 351w, that is carburated with a Holley 4010 model carb. While it has run great all summer, I am trying to see what it would take to convert it to EFI since I have time to work on it over the winter and it needs a carb rebuild anyway. I am pretty mechanically inclined, as I am a Corvette guy (yeah I know I promise not to start any trouble) and have rebuilt several of them including my current '90 model from the ground up.

My questions are as follows:

1. Am I correct in thinking that the 5.0 and 5.7 intakes are interchangeable and are there any significant differences, either in size or performance. If so what stock model intakes should I be looking for. I'm not looking to break the bank, just convert it to something more fuel efficient and reliable, high performance is secondary in this case and I don't mind buying a used setup of ebay or a junk yard.

2. I do have a bit of clearance issue, so can someone tell me what the height of a 5.0 EFI unit is from the base or valley to the tallest point is.

3. Has anyone on here converted a 302 or a 351w carbed engine to efi and if so any pointers or pitfalls to avoid would be appreciated.

5.0 and 5.8 intakes dont interchange, the 351 is wider and taller. As for your thoughts of efi, well your about out of luck. All the new GM stuff is efi from merc but retrofitting a ford passenger car efi to work in marine application is a no go. I own a 30ft scarab with twin small blocks, I know about fuel efficiency :rlaugh: 400 bucks a weekend

You can get a 351 GT40 lower intake (Lightning trucks) and run an Explorer/Cobra/GT40 5.0 upper intake on it. Should work very well in producing lots of torque up to 4,000 rpm which is the sweet spot for a boat.

wont a truck lower and holley upper work also? all the wiring is gonna be a pita if you ask me. gotta make sure all the connections are water tight.

Thats what I was thinking about after finding out that the 5.0 intake won't fit. Probably going to look for an old F150 in a junk yard or ebay with the 5.8 multiport engine in it and yank the intake, wiring, computer out of it. Although I will keep my eye out for the lightning lower as well as suggested. What's kinda ironic is I just last year sold my Dad's '86 F150 that had that exact setup for $1800.

And as far as the wiring goes I've thought of that, I've got a pretty dry spot picked out for the computer, just need to make sure to shrink wrap the connections on the harness. The engine has wiring on it already that gets wet, ie all the starter wiring and the bilge pump.
