I need some help here guys...and girls...lol

I have a 2000 GT Convert and need to find out what number spline axle I have. Does anyone know if I have a 28 spline or a 31 spline? I want to get 3.73 gears and need to know which number spline I have. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Factory should be 28. While it is recommended that you upgrade to 31's when you change gear, it's not mandatory unless you are packing in some serious engine mods with it or plan on racing it on a regular basis at the track. For just day to day driving and a few stop light races, you don't need the 31 spline axel, the 28 will suffice as long as you practice self control and not beat the snot out of it off the line every time.

The 28 spline axles are already in your car. You would only have to replace them if they are worn or a piece is broken from one of the spline. Also, since you have to remove the axles to make the gear change I would recommend that you replace your axle bearings. Everything is already out and its a small expense now which will save you a big time headache down the road. Nothing worse than to put it all together and have the axle bearing go a short while later.

When you replace the gears you will need a shim kit along with the ring & pinion, pinion bearing & race, rear differential fluid, a tube of form a gasket, differential gasket and friction modifier. Are you installing them yourself or having them done somewhere? The hardest part is getting the new shims in place in the correct order. If they aren't in there right, it won't line up.

Hope this helps... Carol

Thanks Carol. I called my brother and he said he has the 3.73 gears and I can have them. He said he would put them in and he said he has all the stuff that I will need. Thanks again.

Oh, my brother is starkie on here and his mustang runs way better than mine..lol...but I am sure I will never catch him..lol
