need new dizzy...what to get?

first off...im a college student so i dont wanna kill myself on a big ole $300 dizzy. I would like an HEI one....one thing to consider is I have the shelby oval air cleaner....other than that i am open to options

If you want to save money than go to the parts store and get an early 80's dizzy from a 302. It will be rebuilt and it will give you electronic ignition also the cost will be around $85. Or you could spend around $250 on a new Mallory unit. Or you could go the HEI route, but remember that your coil will be on top of the cap in that application. What ever you do make sure you run a steel dist. gear if you are running a roller cam.

That is cool! Who figured out an HEI module could replace the big ford one? If the big cap won't fit, you can use a small early cap on a duraspark also. I had an MSD laying around to use instead of a Ford or HEI module, but on a tight budget the HEI is a cool alternative.

Its a dizzy fo' sh*zzy! Its been going on for a while and bugs me too, but I just quietly protest by spelling it out. Kinda like NAWS vs. Nitrous.

Dizzy...erbonix!!! LOL I know but when I saw Dizzy for distributor it's makes you wonder where this country is going!? Oh well as long as were still driving stangs!

Dizzy isn't ebonics. Ebonics though, comes from a seperate dialect of English that has existed long before the term was popularized in the US.

Dizzy has been called that for as long as I can remember calling a transmission a tranny....

but hey, to each his own.

I prefer the 300 dollar MSD.... it's one of the best investments ever. Although I ended up going with a 180 dollar Mallory Comp S/S 32 series distributor for my 351 Cleveland.

Hell, we call the transmission on a helicopter a tranny and the combining gearbox gets shortened to c-box.

On the note of the MSD. Have one. Worth every penny. I'm actually going to be selling it when I get back and have my 351 ready. But I'm also going to be getting another one for my 351!

well....reason for a new dizzy is that my car has no power and bogs down and at cruise it stutters...i got the carb rebuilt, new spark plugs, petronix coil and petronix ignition....still does it....theres a tapping sound to that I can hear really well on the fuel pump when i put a screwdriver to my ear....so my next guess is the dizzy...i ordered a HEI one and the cap was HUGE there was NO way it was going to fit under my shelby air cleaner....thats why i came here and asked you guys.

Can't go wrong with MSD or Mallory.

About 12 years ago, I used a Mallory Unilite distributor on my 65' for a while, and at the time I was commuting about 60 miles each way daily to college. Every time it rained the distributor cap would get wet and I'd have to screw around with drying it out, thereby missing classes (although I admit I didn't "miss" them too much). I tried different caps, but they didn't work. Therefore, I decided right then and there I'd never own another POS Mallory component.
Maybe my Mallory distributor had a casting flaw I was never able to observe; the one thing I can state, however, is that since I converted to the Duraspark I've NEVER had that problem.
I've never had the slightest issue with the Duraspark, but I will be changing to an MSD at some point. I've never heard of anyone having problems with their distributors, and they are the top dog in distributor manufacturing from all I've been able to gather.

I say save a few bucks and buy the MSD. I did and i havent regretted it.

Kinda sounds like you are trying to diagnose a problem by replacing parts. Are you sure the "dizzy" is really the problem?

i cant think of anything else except the petronix products....ive done new fuel filters, rebuilt carb, new spark plugs, new fuel pump...all thats left is the distributor and coil.....anyone have any links on converting to duraspark? i can find those pretty cheap...what all do i need?

need new dizzy...what to get?
