need performance/maintenance help

I know my 91 stang needs maintenance.It has the 5.0.
What spark plugs and wires do you suggest?
What should the timing be set at?This is my daily driver.
I was told that if you advance it,you have to unplug something and then plug it back up once done or it will reset itself.What are they talking about?

What oil do you suggest?
I'm thinking castrol syntech.10W30?
Any other suggestions?
Right now it won't even break the tires loose when I floor it.

sounds like you have an automatic, the auto 5.0's are dogs

use only autolite plugs

set timing at 14-16 degrees for a little more pickup. Just make sure you don't ping, if you do, then dial it back a bit. To set the timing, first pull that black plug out of the timing spout near the dist. Time the car, then put it back in.

WOnt spin the tires loose? If your engine is stock and have stock gears with posi, what makes you think the tires would break loose anyway even if it was brand new? Unless you have a 5 spd and you dump the clutch, changing timing and spark plugs arent gonna help bub. If you are trying to do some tire spinning while already engaged in gear and posi traction, you will need 355's or 373's and a top end kit

Yes it is an AOD.
I figured a tune up might help,but I wasn't expecting miracles.
I know the stick cars will break the tires loose alot faster.
Yes,gears are in this car's future.
I'm planning on putting on shorty headers sometime in the future also.
If I knew the transmission would handle it,a higher stall convertor would help it off the line better.

I just didn't realize how sluggish these cars were.

Try installing a new Fuel Filter if you are going to do a Tune Up

filter is at the gas tank under the car, just right in front of it.

It's the aod's that are sluggish...most just pull them and swap in a t5. the t5 cars are a full second faster.

Timing can make a huge difference. At the track once, I was at 8 degrees, and bumped to 15 degrees, and it took 3/4 of a second off my time slip. If your car is out of tune, it'll make all the difference in the world.

get a shift kit for your aod, that will help slightly.

Sounds good to me...

How many miles are on your car?

Weak valve springs can hinder a timing advance...

The distributor spout plug that you have to remove while your setting the timing is coming off the distributor on the side. My plug was gray...

If your car starts missing, try closing the gap a bit...

I think it's 123,000 miles.Doesn't have the place for the one.
Will I have to drop the gas tank to replace the filter?

no, the filter is right in front of the tank, closest to the front bumper side of the tank. Follow the lines and you can't miss it.

Yes use a Motorcraft Fuel Filter! I like to use a couple Vacuum Plugs on my old Filter when pulling it out so my Arm doesnt take a bath in Fuel.
