Need Some Advice on Launching

Well the local mustang club is renting out a 1/4 mile track in MD in 2 weeks.

I will be running MT DR's
Check out my sig for other mods.

Will I be okay running drag radials with stock rear control arms and original torque boxes? I dont have subframes yet...

I guess what Im asking is. Will I tear up ***** running drag radials?

I eventually plan on getting battle boxes and full length subframes, I just dont have the time right now.


Also, what PSI should I run the MT's at? Im not running screws.
What would be a good RPM to launch at with 3.73's?

This will be my first time racing legally.

well i havent been to the track yet in my mustang. But in my last car(95 z28) i had those drag radials on it. I would just heat them up good and drop the clutch around 4k rpms. If you dont give it enough gas the car will bog down and want to die, because it takes a lot to spin those tires over. Im going to the track this tuesday and i have hoosier street slicks i will be trying out. Stock suspension. I to hope nothing breaks

I think you'll be ok with those mods. I had a 93 notch with E.T. Streets, Vortec S Trim, Trick Flow heads cam and intake and it just cracked the torque boxes a little. I would have put Battle Boxes in but I bought it that way and fixed it later. Did have a crack in a pillar from torque and no frame ties too but it was an 11 sec car.

Yeah I just dont want to break anything because I have to make the 2 hour drive back home in the car...

I know too much traction can be a bad thing.

I shouldnt break any axles though right? Should be a cold day out if that matters.

i doubt you will break axles. i was told the best way to launch and not bust anything is to not side step or dump the clutch. Do the same thing you do when you shift on the street only faster. It will take a bit of practice but much better on the drive train. let your foot come up with the clutch. don't side step. just lift leg quick.

Now what about powershifting...?

Ive got mixed advice about that. I really cant powershift 3rd or it grinds (syncro)

I know it would make my times lower, but at what cost? Blown trans...

power shifting is good i guess but usally at the cost of syncro's and the tranny. i have been told that i probably have 2 tenths of a second in the 1/4 left in my car because i don't power shift. but hey 11.5's without powershifting not bad i guess. i let off gas and am back on it quick. i have missed only 2 shifts in drag racing so far like that. it seems to work for me.

it will take some practice, 2 summers ago i had nitto D/R's and i tried leaving at 3500 rpm's and the car bogged and the next run i tried 4500 and it spun i would try 4000 as a baseline and see how that works. i dont think you would break anything on that setup and i wouldnt try slipping the clutch cause you might just burn it up, thats what happened to one of my friends. just dump the clutch and hold on!

Yeah. I mean I can slip the clutch pretty good on the street but I know the track is a whole different surface...

I get the tires on Tuesday and hopefully get them mounted the same day.

Ill try a few launches on the street and see how they feel.

I know the MT DR's are almost just as sticky as their slicks.
Quite a bit stickier than BFG's or Nittos.

Also is it really worth taking off the front sway bar?

I dont see you breaking anything, and if you do hurt the TQ boxes, the car was weak before, and you should still make it home...

I personally have 142,000 miles on my car, haven't touched the TQ boxes or the rear for that matter and drive over 2 hours each way to the track (bolt on slicks, rev limiter launches, and never worry). I think your alright in that regaurd, so dont even let it cross your mind.

As for launching, I have only been on DRs a few times, and can say, ride the clutch out. Bring the tire pressure down, rev the car and get the clutch out quick, but dont dump it!

yeah I really dont feel like snapping an axle or twisting and axle tube...

Sometimes I think this sport/hobby is kinda funny.
buy an old car for $3k and dump $50k into it. lol

But hell its alot of fun.:SNSign:

i run the same tire...tire pressure is goin to be trial and error IMO...i would start at 17 psi then work my way down..usually 13 - 14 is ideal but depends on track prep and weather...you shouldnt break anything unless the car had problems b4...dump it at 4k you should be fine as far as powershifting if you cant go to 3rd without a problem then dont not worth what could happen..but at least powershift from 1st to second then 3rd to 4th....bring a small air tank...some hand tools....maybe a shorter belt..so u could bypass the smog pump...distributor wrench in case you have bumped timing yet....all those little tricks...and b4 u get to the track buy a bag of ice so u can get that intak nice and cold between runs
