Alright, the car was running just fine on my way to work. I went to go get my boss some lunch and drove back to the office and the car is still running fine. Then I take off, to go get myself some lunch. I get almost to Burger King and the car starts ticking. So, I let off the gas and the ticking goes away. Well I get back to the office and take a quick look at the car. There are no check engine lights on at all. So, I rev the car up in the parking lot....the higher the RPM's get the faster the ticking goes. Let off the gas and there is no ticking. I open the door to hear if it might be the side exhaust.....nothing there....but, could definitely tell it's coming from the engine compartment. I didn't have time to lift the hood and check it all out. So basic break down:

- No Check Engine lights
- Loud ticking
- Ticking speed increases with higher RPM's
- No ticking at idle
- Definitely somewhere in the engine compartment

Any suggestions would be much appreciated (the obvious suggestion of scraping the car is a serious consideration)???

Rerun: No, no smoke when I start it up.

Darkness: What do you mean by "load"? Like when I am sitting in it?

Ford289Mustang: How would my spark plug wire come loose though? or even the spark plug loosen? I will check tonight or before I leave work though. It's worth a shot.

Thanks guys for the quick response!!

Thanks Steve, I will check those tonight....hopefully that is the problem...Cause I want to race tonight.

Now that I think about it, the noise started happening last week at PR.

How would a spark plug wire come loose?

Also, I was thinking, doesn't my car have Coil packs?

The sound literally sounds like I put a baseball card in my spokes...

your car does not have spark plug wires, not like a 5.0 it has the coil on plug, you're right, i dont see how that would come out. they're held down by a bolt.

:nice: , exactly that's what I thought....and it's true!! No, I believe we found the problem...Ford is going to double check for me tomorrow. I think it has to do with sticky lifters. I just got my oil changed about 2000 miles ago....and we checked the oil tonight and it's non-existant!!! We even checked it several times to make sure it was an accurate reading...still same result. So, we added oil thinking that it might get rid of the noise, but the noise is still there. So, either the lifters are completely bad or I don't know. So, it's looking like that new camshaft that I wanted is going to be a must do job... :( :nonono:

yeah dude, it's your headers, I had soo many exhaust leaks from my mustang.
you don't have plug wires, plus if it were loose, it'd shudder because you're on 7 cylinders. and it's most likely not a valve lash issue since your car is OHC.

the ONLY way to fix it is to get the motor nice and hot, get under there and grab the manifold with your bare hands and give em a good shake.

ooh, maybe that's why you're slowing down! you might not be getting all your valve lift, that and your girlfriend driving in 3rd all day long.

I'm blaming all this on my girlfriends fun day of driving from Woodinville to Renton in 3rd gear..... :bang:

BTW, the car is at Evergreen Ford right now being looked into.

Gerard, I will remember to get the exhaust extremely warm and then touch it. :D
