Need some help, career wise.

Alright, to sum it up, I'm 21 years old, and I've been out of school for 3 years. When I graduated I graduated with honors (1 of 3 males), and did best in English, Law, Computers & Psychology. After graduating I wanted to take a break from school, and did a couple bum jobs, and then landed an apprenticeship as a mechanic. As it were, I ended up getting a pretty serious injury in my back and hip, and now the labourious trades are out of the question. My tools and experience will be held on for personal endeavours.

For the last year I have been doing chiropractic/cortozone blocks/massage treatments, and in the midst of the treatments I've taken an Insurance course. This is not something I want to do forever, and I want an Education, but I felt it would be better to return to a decent line of work making more than minimum wage...with benefits.

The help I would ask of Stangnet would be, if you are happy with your job, or content with it, let me know what it is. Recommend me some career choices, tell me what you do, what you needed to do it, if its enough to live a comfortable life. I dont care if I make 100k a year, I just want a decent living.

I would appreciate any help that any of you could assist me with. I'm just lost as to what the hell I'd like to do with the next 45 years of my life. I look through the College programs and find nothing that interests me.

First, I would ask what are your interests? What TV shows do you enjoy watching?

For me, I love my job (attorney) but way too much schooling required. I also enjoy selling real estate, which in PA requires nothing more than a 6 week course and passing a test. You can make some serious bucks if you enjoy homes and finding the right home for a person.

If I wasn't an attorney I would want to drive a snow plow truck in the winter and also operate the caterpillar land movers. I really enjoy doing work outside.

Interests? Martial Arts, English Language, Vehicles..etc. I enjoy being around people, I dont necessarily like them, but I like being around them.

In B.C. in order to get your real estate license you pay the (I think) 2000-2500 for the course, and then have to wait a full year to write the exam. If you fail the exam, you have to wait another 6 months. Both of my parents were Real Estate agents, and you can make good money, but if the market is low, and you arent getting many sales, you dont get any paid wage. Its all comission basis.

As far as TV shows are concerned lol, I enjoy watching UFC, Pride, KOTC, Family Guy, Simpsons, CSI, Futurama, that 70's show, etc.

I was a very similar story. I did very well in school, Went to college to study Mechanical Engineering and hated it. I ended up dropping out of college with a 4.0 after a year and decided I wanted to make money right away. So I made my part time job at the gas station/quick mart my full time job. To be honest it wasn’t that bad but the money was not there, I did learn how to deal with any customer that walked through the doors weather it was to pay for gas, buy some beer or put a gun to my face and rob the place. I did that for a year and a half and realized I liked dealing with people, and liked selling things for profit. On the side I had been detailing cars for a guy at a local car dealership.....long story short the guy offered me a job to do full time detailing and some selling as well. I learned a ton form that guy, he is now a good friend of mine and taught me what I needed to know about business and the way things work. I left him a few years ago to go into full time sales with a large equipment manufacturer, sold a lot equipment there for a year and a half and they asked me to head up the purchasing dept. So I tried it out and love it. I am now the manager and can do just about whatever I want and have been a big part of our company’s growth in the last 2 years.

Sorry for the story, but I want you to see that a lot of people will tell you the only way to get ahead in life is to go to school and get a piece of paper......and for most people that is the best way, but for some of us that just push and fight to make it happen on there own all you need is the opportunity to do the job well and hustle.
Enjoy what you do, and do it well.....whatever it is. I went from making very little with no benefits, to making a very comfortable living with some nice perks in a matter of 5-6 years. Only because I proved myself to one guy who believed in me.

Electronic Technician. Although I got all my training and experience in the Navy. You can do it in the civilian sect in about 2 years maybe less. I'll be out of the Navy by the end of this week. I have already turned down about 5 job offers between $40,000-55,000. Its a very rewarding career.

I dont know about school for the rest of your life. But you will have to do recertifications every so often, especially Microsoft. But everything is going to computers now a days. Hell all the radars and communication equipment on my ship were basically computer controlled. Took all the guess work out of troubleshooting sometimes, sometimes. For the most part the cpu comes up with a fault code. You look the fault code up in the tech manual. It will tell you all of the possible faulty cards to replace in the equipment. Replace them one by one till the problem is fixed. This works most of the time. Sometimes we actually have to breakout test equipment: check signals, voltages, frequencies, etc.,......

for an oil drilling company. I enjoy what I do, the people I work with, get travel on occassion on the corporate jet, and get compensated well for what I do......around 50k

i loved my job, i made real good money free benifits... i was an electrician, mostly residential but i did do a few comercial buildings.. every day was a learning experance, id been there for 2 1/2 years and for an apprentace in the feild with no experiance the start out pay wasnt great, but the guys i worked with were really Cool and didnt mind teaching me alot quicker then they learned... you need to be an electrical apprentace for 4 years to become a journymen, i was a year and a half away, but i new about as much or if not more then a journymen... my Boss was my goodfriends uncle and my friend had only been there a year longer then me.. to most labor to the job consist of carrying 80lbs spool's of wire 1000ft... from the truck to the house or place of work.. i got layed off about 3 months ago now, id really like to stay in that line of work!.. but in michigan the economys so bad here that theres barly enough work for my boss to do by himself... but if it picks up or if another company is hiring id go back in a heart beat!.. its all hands on and vary skilled trade!...

but like i said the start out pay sucks... and 80pound spools might hurt your back but thats what i did and i live comfortable for a While..

Sometimes you have to go where the money is. Put a resume online. See if you get any bites. You may have to relocate. That's the reason I turned down those job offers. I'm not ready to relocate yet and I'm finishing my engineering degree.

I am graduating in May with an Architecture Degree, I was originally going to go to grad school for it, and become a licensed architect, but have decided on something else. I am going to be taking a 2 year course for Yacht Design and in that time I plan to work as an architect (at a local firm). After I finish the course I hope to get a job working for a boat company in either NJ, or NC/SC. If this fails I figure Ill stick with architecture and continue down that path!

Its tough going back to school Im sure, but at least now you probably have a better idea of what you dont want to do, and have seen what the working world is like!

Well have you concidered going back to the automotive world and worked at a parts, service desk or maybe even in sales. Stay with a company for a while and work your way into a managers position.

i spent 4 years learning this stuff. and regret ever getting into it.
the computer side anyways. I usually have a good time when i get to do the network side of it. Especially huge jobs. Me and a friend done the phone system at georgia state university last year. had a great time. Its all on what you enjoy.

I graduated from college with a degree in computer science back in December of 05 I was working a high paying job for my expeierence My contract ran out and I found myself scraping by working for a tool and dye business reason being my uncle got me in, I had no clue what I was doing but it paid the bills.

I was frantically looking for jobs possible relocation anything to get out of where I was. I contemplated more schooling/certifications anything to help get a job, and out of the blue I got a job offer that was back where I started pay wise so I swooped it up. I will definitly be going back for more schooling it can only help I chose computers because it's second nature to me. Good luck with whatever you decide..but definitly do something you enjoy otherwise it's not worth it in my opinion (hence the tool and dye job)
