need some help romoving water pump

over the past little while, i've been slowly taking apart my motor so i can give it to the machine shop thats doing my motor as a core, last weekend i got the motor out, and its sitting on a stand, i left the water pump on the motor because i figured it would be easier to take off with the motor out...... so i got to the point today where i was gonna take off the water pump.... now my problem is 3 of the heads of the bolts that hold it on broke off, i figured no biggie and i got the rest of them out without much trouble, and figured because the bolts are shouldered (not threaded into the water pump) the pump should just slide off...... i was wrong, this thing seems like it ain't gonna move, idid notice that the other bolts where in pretty bad shape probably the original pump cause they were all rusted...... so after about 2 hours of fighting with it in -20 C weather (0 F)........ and about 4 beers later i gave up to warm up the hands (which don't like the weather plus holding cold wrenchs) any of you got any suggestions?.... i'm gonna give her another shot in the morning.. i am planning on getting a aftermarket pump, do the after market ones come with bolts?...... if not where can i get some.... 2 of those bolts that broke are the ones that have thread after the bolt to attach the power steering pump, i'm not too sure on where to get those

mechanics gloves are a place to start.

if i read you right, you are gonna have a machine shop work on the block, no?

you can use an easy out or something similar, but i might just ask the machine shop to take care of it for ya. not sure on the bolts, though a dealer should show it on microfisch or bolt companies might sell kits.

i shot it with penetrating oil and leving it over night..... my dad said..... ahh i'll get it off for ya...... then he said something along the lines of damn rookies... lol.. i would like to give it to the machine shop with just the crank and pistons etc. ..... for no other reason other than i wanna take it apart for my self, because this is my first time doing this, and i wanna experience it, this is just part of the experience i guess.............. i figure i can't screw much up taking it apart....but putting it together i feel better having a long block assembled for me

ah yes, the enthusiasm of youth. when you get older, you will find reasons to have others do it for you. LOL J/K.

i still like the easy out idea. got any of those? sometimes a little heat (torch) can help to persuade the bolts out.

Make sure you have all the bolts out/ broken off. use a the biggest hammer you have and it will break loose. You are not going to use that pump again, so hit it hard. Once the timing cover is off too, you may be able to get a small pipe wrench on the broken ones and shock them loose with a big hammer. 3lb will do you. If you have a bolt thats stuck in the future, dont pull on it hard. Use a six point boxed end and tap it with a hammer. This will give you the best chance of shocking it loose instead of wringing it off.

ya i have easy outs at the store......lol........ i may just have to pick some up, i'll try the heat... the bolts are shouldered right..... so it SHOULD slide off the bolts... i was doing the hammer idea, cause at this point i was mad already because this is a supposedly easy thing to take off, so i seen a hammer aka. the PERSUADER, just lying there, so i hit it a couple times.... no dice though ah well we'll see what morning brings........... tomorow you may see another thread pop up that says "cracked my water pump, how do i ge tthe remainder of it off"

lmao.... so i was out there today trying again and my buddy came over... he says ah let me try so he takes the pry bar and starts reaming on it.. i was like i already did that you just gotta break the seal........ so to make a long story short.. i need a new timing chain cover because he cracked mine, ah he works at ford and he's gonna pay for it so no biggie i guess. but on the plus side my water pump is now off.... on a side note. i'm doing a 347, should i reuse the stock pump?...... i say probably not, so what is a good pump that i should pick up?

whoa horsie, you want to use your mangled pump? or do you mean should you get something else? i think it must be the latter - sorry. LOL.

Rick has had real good luck with Stewart pumps - i might try them out based on his experiences. i think the online parts stores sell home brand or not too expensive 'higher flowing" units.

or just head down to the parts store and get a new or rebuilt one for cheap - your call. i think people would need more info to know if you need a better pump.

ya it was some sarcasim, the stock pump still appears to be fine, its just the timing cover thats all messed up, and he already said he would replace that (damn chevy guys, i said it was sabatoge and said i was gonna kick him out of the garage ),

as for the water pump i got him also pricing me out one from ford cause he gets bassically cost, because he works there , and i'm gonna be pricing out one at canadian tire (local parts store), i was just curious on if theres a good brand out there that maybe i havn't heard about, i'll check out those Stewart pumps for sure though, thanks

Have you thought about an electric water pump?

Meizer makes great electric water pumps and if your going for the 347 you like HP so why not release a few more, If you run an electric water pump you have to run an electric fan also just food for thought.

here is a part number for a mezier that is a direct replacement for your car:
MEZ-WP-312
with that pump you don't need anything fancy just bolt it on and wire it in. great for High performance street and you don't need to change your belt setup.

thanks for that.... but worse case senario, i can always order the ones for the accerories through my buddy that works at ford

also i thought of an electric water pump.... but still unsure on the whole matter, i've heard bad things about electric ones....... but then again i've heard bad things about belt driven ones......... so i'll decide one day
