Need some helpful knowledge ASAP

Before I make a costly mistake, please help me out!

Got a 96 with PI heads. Have a sweet deal pending on a set of SHM 2770 Cams. website lists specs as I-232 E-242 at .550, 113* lobe seperation. Will these work or will I be looking at too much duration for my pistons? Don't want to go through this again.

If anyone has done this successfully or are knowledgable about cam specs please let me know. Thanks!

Well, I am not trying to redirect... I am just saying that with the really hard questions it is often a good idea to cross post them so that some one with a high level of technical knowledge notices them. And since the only forum I personally know of this has an equal level of expertise is MPH, I recomended that one...
 
consider VT stage II. 230 240 @.050 and 570 lift. 108 lobes. 550 lift and those duration numbers are not real high.

not exactly the same but lift number of .550 if typical for moderate cams. my guess on rpm band for your cam is up to 6400 rpm. stock springs should float at 6800 rpms. better springs can help, but no piston hits.
 
I would love to have the VT Stage II's but $600 is more than I want to spend right now. I'm trying to get this done by Thanksgiving. At the same time I don't want to buy a set of cams that won't work.
 
those specs are pretty healthy for 281 cu. in. maybe not as big as VT, but bigger than crane. i believe the crane is worth 35 whp.maybe find a cam with higher exhaust lift. or at least 108 lobe seperation. you have pi on 96 block. so your compression will work well with closer lobe seperation. more overlap uses exhaust gas momentum to pull intake gasses into cylinder better than 112*. 108* to 109* maximizes horsepower. 112 tends to flatten torque curve but kills top end. also 112 to 114 tends to lug/pre-ignite the motor at lower rpm's with high compression. VT is an excellent cam. i would wait for it.

You bring up some very good technical points and i thank you for that. I figured the VT's would work best, just can't find anyone selling a pair. I guess if i don't find some soon, i'll just have to bite the bullet and pay the price...
