Need some opinions here! Timing chain, tensioner etc related.

I've just removed my timing cover to replace what turned out to be a bad tensioner or just in need of cleaning.... I have slack in my passenger side chain...tensioner isnt popped out all the way...in comparision to the drivers side.

Two questions...its appears some "sludge" may be the culprit in my failing tensioner...can it be cleaned up and good as new and if so...whats the proper way of doing so. Am I off better by just buy a new one?

Second question...I see a timing chain set....the chains, sprockets, tensioners, chain guides, etc...how much trouble would it be to replace all of that...ie aligning it all up and the likeliness of screwing something else up in the process. Special tools involved?

And would it be worth it?...the car is a '03 with 53,xxx miles on it.

Definatly replace the tensioner, I would replace both. As for the chains and guides. You only have 53k on the car I can't see them being worn badly enough to warrant replacement. Good luck
