Need stroker opinions

I decided to go 331 but people at the races are telling me that it isn't good for a everyday street car. It would only last me about 7-10,000 miles. How true is this? I was told it's better to bore to 306 and I can get good power and possibly high 11's with that. Low 12's would be good for me on street tires but I want to do it right and only once. I would port my iron gt-40's and cobra intake and change cam too (nothing radical). I would like to hear from you guys before I make an honest decision.

lol...this topic has been beaten to death, try a search, call a company, or you can listen to your "local racers".

In the end, youll find out that your "local racers" have their head up their ass..

I searched the limited 2 pages that were provided to me and I read through the threads. Most of them were comparing horsepower potential. I plan to call some companies and ask a few "local racers" but I would also like to hear from you guys. Thanks.

NA, the 331 is gonna be pretty sweet, and still have quite a bit of torque with your ported heads and intake, but then you may want to be carefull with cam specs too.

Go 331 or 347 they will make more power, last a long time and will be much stronger then your current internals if you buy good parts.

I'm pretty sure that your local racers are smoking a little too much crack. If it's built right it should last just as long if not longer than the factory setup, of course that depends on the builder and parts used.

You can make a 331 or 347 last quite a long time. Just make sure that your pistons are designed for either of the two. They have offset wrist pins to minimize wear.

for the most part a 331 or a 347 will usually make more power than a 306.

i agree with everyone.
a good bottom end will hold out a long time.

I am planning on 65k or better from my engine. Keep the rpms reasonable and use quaility lightweight parts.

2500 miles on my 327. It's damn fun, and I haven't put the blower on yet It's my daily driver too

So what I'm gathering is durablility isn't really a concern. That's nice to hear. I'm still leaning towards the 331 but it's a big money project.

I've had my 331 in since Nov. and have about 7000 miles so far but I have no complaints. I don't drive it everyday but only because I have to drive about 45 miles to school each way.

When I decided to do the 331 I had a rod knocking in my 306 after less than 18,000 miles, so when we got into it we realized that the clearances had to have been way off, because nothing could be reused. It wasn't just a rod. So truth be told, if whoever puts it together does a crappy job, 306, 331, 347 or whatever, you probably won't get 20k on it. Not getting 7-10k though, I have never heard that one before.

Having said that though IMO, if you do the even the 331, you will be holding yourself back with those heads, cam and intake. I know because I used to have it on my 306. I mean you can definitely keep it for a bit to save some cash but I probably wouldn't put the money into porting those heads. A good port job will run you about 800 (luckily mine were already ported when I got em), so do what I did and give yourself a few weeks, sell the heads and cam, get some tfs or afr's and run a custom cam. If you do keep the intake like I had to for money reasons, you can get it ported and run with that for awhile like I did. Trust me, it is worlds apart from my old combo. I'm talking like a 70-75 hp difference.

331 will be less streetable IF you have it externaly balanced with a 50Z balancer.But it's difficult to find a 331 kit with a 50Z balancer anyways so no problems.

I had my 331 balanced to a 50oz instead of a 28. you just take your kit and balancer and flywheel in to the machine shop and they take care of the rest. My car is pretty streetable though. However in defense of the above comment, streetable is different to each of us.

50Z 331 kit that crank itself wieghs slightly less because of the reduced mass of the internal counter wieghts but has added stress on the snout.28Z kit crank wieght slightly more but less stress on the snout.

you could very well be right but I wanna say that my crank came 0 balance so you set it up however you want it. 50 or 28

Romac aluminum balancer, 11lbs I have one, it's light. So is the Fidanza flywheel 28oz balance
