Need to build rear end....need laymens terms

Im in the same boat as 2003gt. I dont have as much power as him right now, but in my sig you can see the mods I have and the ones Im planning on getting. The only ones I didnt list are VT Engines stage 1 cams and a 100 shot of NX. With my 3k stall Ill probably be shooting off the launch. How should I build up my rear end? Which mods should I go with?

So, I could find a used 8.8 posi with 3.73 from an explorer, (would this bolt right up to my car ?) and then buy the axels with the right spline ?

NO, but you could use the gears and carrier. The axle housing won't bolt up. You'd have to narrow it and re weld the mounting brackets off your factory rear axle to the Explorer one. Your best bet would be to just buy a 31 spline trac loc from FRPP. I think they're like 189. The only reason I say that is because chances are you'll pay that amount, if not more for a used Explorer axle with God knows how many miles on it and you'll want to rebuild it . Then you'll have to buy 31 spline Mustang axle shafts on top of that. I've got a part # for that FRPP carrier around here somewhere, I'll post back later if I can find it. If you can find a VERY LOW mileage Explorer axle for dirt cheap, (like $150 or less) I'd go for it, otherwise I'd just buy all new parts that way you'll know what you're working with.

1st off, I need to clear a few things up. What I said above is refering to a SOLID AXLE NOTan IRS. An IRS swap is a whole different ball game. You don't want one of those any way if you're looking to strengthen up you rear. I talked to quite a few Cobra owners at the track this summer who have snapped their half shafts. Some, more then once before converting to a solid axle.

The part # for the Trac loc is M4204-F318. It retailsfor $299, but I'm sure you can get it cheaper than that. The one that goes for 189 is M4204-F318O. The only difference's is that one is an open unit(no clutches) and it CAN'T be use with ABS. Not sure why, but it can't. I'd get the M4204-F318 if I were you. That's the one I have. It's also the same one that's used in the Cobra's. Make sure you add 4oz. of Friction Modifier for the clutches if you go with the F318. :nice:
