Boy that's an OLD wheel chart....click on the sig for a much more detailed chart for your year car...however in a nut shell, 10 inch don't fit without major modifications to suspension or the sheet metal (with fit defined as the tire and wheel are inside the plane of the fender)

Here is a 255 on an 8 inch wheel:

you can get 9" of tread, approximately 10.5" of sidewall "bulge" width under the rolled fenders of a 65/66 with an 8" wide rim backspaced 4.5". whether you want to run 255mm street tires, 10.5" street slicks or 9" slicks, they're all basically the same width, check the tire manufacturer for specs. backspacing is the key, dodgestangs chart is awesome too if you havent checked it out yet.

Just last week I bought 15X8 Weld Draglites with 4.5" of backspace for my 66 as my strip wheels.

I have Hoosier 26.0X9.0X15's slicks mounted and screwed on them and they appear to fit perfect. I say "appear" because I have not run them yet and I had to take them out to the shop that is installing my roll cage to test fit them. But they do have much more rear quarter clearance than the same tires on 15X7" with 3 3/4" back space. BTW I have reverse eye 5 leafs. I do have a Currie 9" rear end that has 11" drums and is just shy of being stock width. I think it's 57 3/4 wide? I would have to verify on my rear end order to make sure.
