Some of you might have seen the thread about my troubles with a UPR xpipe not fitting properly. I took a drive down to the place where I bought the exhaust and let them have a look at it. Mechanic agreed there was no way the pipes would ever fit right do to the bends and positioning of the cat (an inch in one direction and it would've been fine) They took some pictures and I'm taking the exhaust back to them and getting my money back. God deal, now onto the part I need advice on. 1988 Mustang Convertible, I don't want to spend an unholy amount of money on a catted xpipe but I do want one that will fit PROPERLY with no modification to the transmission crossmember and fit around an AOD transmission. Any thoughts? I love how the BBKs fit, but I've never seen them on a auto fox. Will the fact of it being an auto matter? I have stock headers and plan to get shortys down the line when funds allow. So to sum it all up I need a catted xpipe, designed for shortys, that will fit properly with no modifications of any kind. Any recomendations? I've been looking but I want some experienced peoples advice not a company trying to push their products.

CatCo has a high-flow cat'ed H-pipe available for right around $300 through Summit Racing. I've heard of several folks running those, and never heard any negatives on 'em.

BBK H's and X's I've heard several folks complain about having to really fight to get them up into place on the header flanges and/or the crossmember hanger(s).

A Magnaflow cat'ed X-pipe would be a nice one, as well as Bassani, but be ready to dig deep into your pockets/credit card for one of those. Can't think of any occasions where I've read about any complaints on either of those brands - one of those "you get what you pay for" things, I guess.

Whatever you do, avoid any X- or H-pipes that don't have tranny crossmember hangers, as they will tend to do the same crap that UPR X-pipe does - poor fitment, and a tendency to sag at the rear flange. Pypes has a cheap cat'ed X-pipe but (even though I love their Violator mufflers to death) it's almost exactly the same crappy design used by UPR for theirs.

I didn't have any fitting issues with my Pypes, although the driver's side tail pipe sticks out about an inch longer than the passenger side. I like the sound over the appearance though so it doesn't bother me My exhaust will scrape on my driveway and high speedbumps, but the car is lowered as well.

Bassani aluminized catted X-pipe for under $300. Fits perfectly.
