Needing Some Mid Pipe info

Im gonna get a new mid pipe soon,but I have never gotten one for a stang,so I really dont know to much about them,I know x pipe is a raspy tone and h's are a deep tone.I have flow 44's welded in and I wanna make them sound better with a high flow catted H.I saw the vid posted recently on the gt running Pypes violators and a mac o/r x,that sounded so good.What would be the best mid H pipe to get close to that.I found a Mac pro chamber with cats but is says unavaible due to issues from Mac and they didnt know when or if it would be avail.

A H pipe and Flows will give you a very classic muscle car sound. Going with a catted H pipe will keep it pretty tame though. Offroad midpipes are where the sound is at.

If you did go with an X pipe it would still sound good. It would have a little of the old school Flowmaster sound mixed with a little more agressive X pipe sound.

The Prochamber is nice but its kind of expensive. They also sound a little more tame than a convential H or X pipe, but they do work well. Mac may be out, but other companys probaly have some in stock. Shop around a little and see what you find.

Mac and BBK sell a good bit of H pipes, and they work fine. MRT probaly makes the best in terms of quality from what I hear. They sound great also.

Hmmm im gonna have to really do some looking,In my county it only has too look as if there are cats,they dont hook anything up,they just look under to see if its got them.

How often is your inspection? If you really want an offroad mid pipe you can always keep the stocker and swap them out around inspection time.

Its only once a year,but the only problem is that IM Kinda Lazy...I know its only about 15mins worth of work. I looked at some sound clips earlier on the MRT catted H with all stock Mach1 vs the entire stock Mach exhaust and between the 2 clips was a huge difference.But those are very pricey.I remember back on some of my 80's z28's I would just gut out the cats.Im just wanting to increase the volume and keep the low rumble muscle car sound.

Well I just thought of something,The stock pipes are 2.25 in right?Most of the mid pipes im seeing are 2.50",will it still be a direct bolt-in or is there some modding or do I make sure the mid is 2.25"?I know these are dumb questions but I have never messed with the exhaust on stangs before.

You are correct about stock being 2.25".

It would be a waste to buy a 2.25" midpipe, I actually dont think anyone makes an aftermarket one thats 2.25" for our Stangs.

2.5" will bolt up just fine. Its mostly ball and socket fittings which doesnt pose a problem for the size difference.

I ran my X pipe with the stock as well as Mac catback and it all fit up the same...

The MRT catted H is the best H pipe on the market, & it sounds great, but its VERY PRICEY....I had one on my Mach before I went to longtubes, & it sounded great, fit great, & it was full stainless...Unfortunately it cost over $500 I used to care about getting stainless steel piping, but later I realized that since I live where it doesnt snow at all, I was throwing money away that i could be spending on other mods. Aluminized lasts long too, & it doesnt change performance, & its alot cheaper. I suggest getting a Mac off road H pipe & swapping back to the stocker when its time for inspection....U will notice a huge difference in the higher RPM's on your Mach when u remove the cats, & it will sound much more aggressive than a catted pipe....BTW, I also had an off road X pipe, & I didnt like the raspiness....

I have a few clips for ya....I know I have different mufflers, & longtubes, but Im just giving u an idea of what different midpipes will sound like on your Mach 1....

The x seemed a whole lot louder than the H,is that true or is it just the recording,I liked the H sound but it seemed alot quieter.The catted H doesnt really sound any louder than mine does now.

I think it was because I was using the old camera i used to have when I recorded the X pipe vid & that camera made everything sound loud & grainy...The H pipe still screams, but is a tad bit quieter, I like the tone alot more though than the X...

Epik--- For What It's Worth.

Scoobs- prochamber all the way man. I don't know where BR heard one, but I had one on my 87, and that midpipe is one bad larry. Sounds awesome, like a cross between the X and H, makes good power. It's what I'm saving up for. H pipes are classic, but IMO a bit boring when you sound like everything else. X pipes are nasty, and I do enjoy that nice raspy sound they put out, but the PC has the best of both worlds. Nice bass at low RPM, raped ape scream when you lay on it. Get one, preferably the coated black one, and don't look back. Also, if you get a tuner, like an SCT XCal II, you can turn off your rear O2 sensors, and then pass inspection with an O/R pipe. Atleast here in MA you can, because our cars just get plugged in, no sniffer dyno. As long as there is no check engine light on, and no codes in the computer, you pass. By disabling the rear O2s, you get rid of the nasty CEL that an offroad pipe causes, and you pass. Now, if the guy looks under the car, you might be screwed, although i did convince a state trooper once that the chamber on my old prochamber was in fact a large high-flow cat. He believed me and let me go...

Oh, and if you get the SCT, you can tune for gears, upgraded rims, and if you get one new, get it sent with some MACH tunes on it, and you'll pick up a nice bit of power too. Better than buying MIL elims IMO.

Ive planned to get a tuner but it will be some time before that.As for o/r pipes,here they look under the car for them..thats the only way they check,I inspected cars for some time in the past.So its either o/r and keep the stocker for inspecs or get another kind.I was thinking a catted pro chamber but everyone says that Mac is currently not producing them.Ive seen some vids of Pypes catted H and they didnt sound bad,but Im not sure about pypes.

Now I did think of something but I dont know anyone to weld.If you have seen pics of Pypes cats...I thought of getting an o/r pipe and using there cats,kinda a long cylinder shape,guttin out the internals and slipping them over the o/r pipe to give them the appearance of a cat but the mid pipe would actully run right through the center of the cats.Like I said they only look under the car to see if they have them.

I agree about the prochamber sounding great, but have to disagree about H pipes sounding like everyone else. Mainly, because on modular stangs, I would say that 75% of people run X pipes nowadays, plus my combo is pretty abnormal with Mac LT's, o/r h, & Bassani catback....

So true here in TX.Everyone is running an X,most peeps I know dont run an H.

I stand corrected. Faux cats could work if noone looks closely. Take a look over at 50resto.com for the PC, last I checked they had em catted.

You have to be carefull now getting the offroad pipes. You can no longer buy Mil eliminators from any dealer or speed shop. It is a federal offense for them to even be made anymore and the ones that are out there were supposed to be returned. It is also a federal offense to sell any vehicle without cats. It is all over the EPA's website under the clean air act. My check engine light is one and I was just going to buy the Mil's (the dealer sold me my car without cats, now they have to get me a new pipe.) Americanmuscle.com carries an SLP mid-pipe with high flow cats for 419.00 shipped an it works with shorty headers or if you decide to get long tube headers later down the road you still wont have to buy a new mid-pipe it will work with those as well.
