New 4.6 owner lookin for help.

I just recently purchased 04 mustang gt 5 speed premium package and the car only has 52k on it. When I was test driving everything sounded great granted I had the windows down. Well when I picked the car up I just so happen to be ridin with the windows up and noticed a little chatter coming from what sounds like the transmission. It's a very slight chatter can only be heard with windows up and radio turned down and it only occurs when just takin it easy like maintainin steady pace and slight acceleration. It feels like it shifts fine and the noise goes away when I let off the throttle but I'm also noticing a slight sqeak at slow speeds when im disengaging or engaging the clutch for like backing up. I searched around and one thread said it sounds like a throw out bearing. But I'd like any thoughts and opinions please.

Hmm I'm really unsure of how to describe it other than its pretty steady but has a noticeable sound cruising around 70 with all components turned off. I can't feel it coming through the shifter or nothing like that. Best description I can really give is a feint chatter mixed with a tad of meat grinder and maybe a slight whine.

Best test for a tob is to go to a car wash, roll down the windows, put in nuetral and let off the clucth. It is sounds like u hatched some chicklets then thats ur issue. My 04 got a brand new trans at 30k and it whinned just a bit. Got worse after I got rid of the factory rubber bushing on the handle. I doubt u have anything to worry about.

I didn't even consider fuel injectors never really thought they do anything like that. I'll play the cricket game later. I hate to worry so much but I rather catch a problem early than later since I got no warranty with the car. Thanks for the input guys

If you have an aftermarket shifter, that could be the chatter you are hearing. They transfer more transmission noise into the passenger compartment because they don't have rubber in the handle like the stock shifter. My MGW does it, especially in 5th. I may try one of the Cobra Bob rubber shifter gaskets on mine soon. Just google Cobra Bob shifter gaskets.

I'll get some pics up of the car and shifter later and see what ya think. I'm just makin an assumption when I say upgraded shifter because the way its set up cars tan interior with like a deep brown mix and then out of no where I got a silver trim and stuff surrounding the headunit and shifter.

The silver trim is normal 04 stuff. The chrome ring is normal for a premium package car as well. The knob is not. The plastic just pulls off of the console so pop it up and see if it says anything that might mean its aftermarket (the shifter that is).

Hearing gear noise with an aftermarket shifter is completely normal and what you're hearing, a "faint chatter mixed with a tad of meat grinder and maybe a slight whine", is exactly what you'll hear. The factory shifter has a two-part lever with the two halves separated by a soft rubber isolator and two bolts holding them together. This isolator is there precisely to stop those noises from making it into the cabin. You can see the isolation here:

That soft isolator also allows some squishy slop in the shift action which enthusiasts like to solidify by going aftermarket. In the process, they let the noise in too.

The squeak you hear may or may not be the release bearing. If you hear the squeak only when the pedal actually moves and/or when you work the clutch with the engine off, it's probably the pivot point for the release arm that needs lube. If you hear the squeak when the engine is running and the pedal is depressed and it goes away once the pedal is released, the sound is probably the bearing.

:hail2: wow thanks trinity I'll definately play around with it some and investigate into it this weekend I haven't really listened for the squeak to much seems to only occur in reverse and its not on every attempt. I haven't really messed with it listening for stuff while the cars off but I'll give it a whirl.
