Ok so i have a 351w and I was putting in my new cam today and after i got it in I started wondering how much play back and forth should there be in the cam? I bolted the thrust plate down and the cam moves like an 1/8th of an inch back and forth. If this matters it is a hydraulic roller cam from comp cams.

If you haven't put the timing chain on yet, there will be some play. Installing the timing chain sprocket should pull the cam pretty tight against the thrust plate. There will be a little play, but nowhere near an 1/8".

That is too much movement. One of my books says .001-.007 of an inch. The other says .0005-.0055. At the .125 endplay you have the spinning cam will get into something. The ignition timing will change as the cam moves foward and back as well. The cam sprocket may not work with your block. Consult the timing set manufacturer.
