Ok well i just bought a notch about 3 hours from my house and drove it the whole way but i had a couple questions. First when i am in 1st gear or reverse it kinda studders when i drive(not the driver) like as if its a warped rotor or something but its perfect on the highway. Also when i was almost at my house the speedo needle stated bouncing, not too bad but none the less still bouncing. Also the speedometer is off, i dont know why because this car is stock as all hell but when my buddy was cruising at 80 it said i was at 60. And finally when at a stoplight is idles at 1300 wtf. Lol any suggestions on how stupid i am would be greatly appreciated.

For the stumbling problem, try a tune up first. If it doesn't help, at least you will know the condition of all the replacable small parts on the car.

For the Speedo - count the driveshaft rotations per 1 wheel revolution. If the driveshaft turns 3.75 times per one revolution of the rear tire, than there are 3.73 gears in the rear end. The same thing goes for 4.11's.

They might be stock gears... IF they are, we will have to figure out why your speedometer is spinning faster than it should.

If the cable where loose your speedometer would read slower than actual speeds.

ya i'd say check the speedo cable behind the dash. if everything checks out i'd pull it and inspect it

I would check the speedo gear if they are stock gears. Sounds like someone may have put some higher gears in the rear and a matching speedo gear at the trans but when time came to sell, taken the gears out of the rear and left the wrong speedo gear in the trans. The jumping can also be caused by grinded teeth on the speedo gear, very common when doing a gear change and using a speedo gear that doesn't quite match up like the original.

Buy:
idle air control $70
TPS $25
Cap/Rotor/Plugs/Wires

If not back to normal idle after that, then the idle set screw has been messed with, but usually it's the IAC and the TPS going out. That tune up should stop the stumbling as well :)

where would you guys suggest i buy these items? and also until i get these it wont hurt to drive it in the meantime right? i mean i drove from lake havesu to phoenix and it was smooth in every other gear.

There is a sensor that holds the speedo cable in place if it goes bad along with the gear it will make the car read faster or slower and make the needle bounce.. I had the bounce problem in my 87 and i changed the thing and it stopped.

my dead stock 88 lx when I got it had 2.73's in the pumpkin, but the speedo, diff tag, and door tag was set up for 3.08 so it was off.

not sure if it was a factory error or someone threw in a diffrent rearend at some point in time.
