having this unit installed right now. the guys performing the installation are telling me that they cannot completely tie the shaker 500 system into this particular head unit.

they are saying that i will lose the front subwoofers and that without completely re-doing the car there's no way to hook them up

can anyone here elaborate on this?

I think that may be BS...I had the Pioneer AVIC D-1 navigation installed 3 months ago and it was plug and play. All of the stock components work and it thumps!

I got mine at Car Toys in Portland OR 503 285 3444, my installer was Jeremy. You might want to call and find out.

I think it is BS too. I put in an Alpine and everything works.

I actually have the shaker 1000 and all 4 subs kick hard

It is complete B.S. All they need to do is tie the low-level leads of the head unit into the factory wiring in the dash. Also, they will need to use a transformer to step down the head unit's remote turn-on lead down to about 5v, and tie that into the factory amp turn-on wire. If they don't use a transformer, the factory amp will "pop" everytime you turn the radio on/off.

The correct transformer can be purchased at Radio Shack for like $3.

However, here's the best advice I can give you: if you purchased the head unit from these guys, and they don't know how to install it correctly in your car, I would NOT have bought it from them.

thanks for the input guys. they actually got everything installed and working perfectly.

i'm guessing he did exactly what you described tom281. he mentioned that they were getting the popping sound so they turned it down to 6v.

the name of the place is Al & Ed's and is a very reputable chain in the SoCal area, which is why i bought from them in the first place.

also, the guy who did the install mounted the microphone in the reading lamp bezel located directly behind the rear view mirror and it looks and works great!

Hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question, but why not just bypass the shaker 500 amp altogether ?? that way you can convert the factory speaker wiring over to RCA's that plug straight into the new amp and head unit..If it could be done, there would be no need for an adaptor or transformer...

I don't think he mentioned having a new amp, just a new head unit. Plus, if you keep the factory Shaker500 subs, you will need an amp capable of driving low impedance loads- if I remember right, the factory subs are around 1.3 ohms.

The factory amp turn on wires need 5v. I installed an AVIC-D2 in May and have had no problems. It was actually an easy install.

the factory subs are about 4 ohm DVC. I wired mine to aftermarket amp and NOW they sound great.

Aren't they dual-2? I'm almost sure of it. I rewired mine for what I assumed was a 4 ohm load, but I don't have my DMM anymore. Could someone measure one for me?

you know what, in think your right,its been a long day with beers............. i put mine to 4 ohms and got 3.6 ohms. my bad

I did a HU install today. The part you need from Radio Shack is listed here:

It only cost a couple bucks.

If you turn on your system and get a loud POP from the front speakers, then you know the installer didn't install the regulator.

I spent several hours researching this before I did my install. Planning really does make things easier. Everything fired up right away with no problems.

Man, you had me salivating thinking I could 4x my power by switching my wiring. They do OK at 65 RMS.

I got a shaker 500 setup and just replaced the headunit with the Z1 (sweat unit)...however I dont think I got the amp right...I did the stepdown voltage from 12v to 5v...but no audio...the rca's for the amp harness to plugged into the nonfadding wires on the head unit...is there a config in the head unit I need to do also???

any help would be awesome
