New Carb Time . . . input needed . . .

Yeah, but I want to write the RIGHT check! LOL! I don't mind spending the extra dough . . . if it's worth it. But when things get near $1,000, FI looks better and better.

why don't you call Bigs and talk to them, until then its all speculation. Send them an e-mai at least. They'll need to know all the specs on your engine (the more the better) and tell them what you're looking for, and whats wrong with your current carb. From what I can gather, their prices are very reasonable, especially considering the knowledge and experience they have.

Already did . . . $839 . . . *sigh*

I've got a company putting together a salvaged/new 351W fuel injection setup, now. If they're close, I'll go that route.

Well, I got input back from a company specializing in salvage EFI packages, and they basically told me an $850 carb was a BARGAIN compared to what fuel injection would cost me.

Great . . .

Jbuening, I sent that guy on EBay an EMail. We'll see what he says.

Hopefully it works out for you. I haven't used the guy but he sure is reasonable. Check out his extras like the proform or HP main body, etc. He had a silver and ford blue one in a picture a week ago that looked sweet. There are also others that sell nice carbs like Quick Fuel Technology (see summit catalog), BIGS, and even the Barry Grant Demon carbs but i've heard the quality control has gone down the drain there.

Yeah, I just wish there was some kind of way to KNOW what kind of improvement to expect. I'd hate to pay an extra $300-$500 on little or no boost.

Anyone had any experience with these carbs:

Holley Street Avenger Carburetors

I run a Holley Street Avenger 670 electric choke on my 351 setup, and it runs hard as hell. Great acceleration, and I have not had to to touch it since I put it on. It looks dam good as well.

Also I was driving the car 48miles per day back and fourth to work until I got my daily driver pickup..gas was not so bad as well.

Edit:Hmm read thru the posts now. There are people who are in the know way more than I, and I got my carb advice from here. D.Hearne was a great help. I would say if you do not want to rebuild, an 870, or perhaps a 770 HSA would fit the bill.

In my personal opinion, you probably won't get much extra that you can feel. It may show up on the dyno but nothing as far as the seat-o-pants meter. You'd probably still have to tune it once you get the $700 carbs cause very few are spot on out of the box. I also forgot another big name brand, JET carbs. Is this for a weekend cruiser?

I love my mighty demon carb. I had so many issues getting it to run right out of the box mostly due to my inexperience. After all this trial and error I learned all the little tuning capabilities of this carb. Which is why it appeals to me, the design is amazing, and gives me the ability to really tune every spot on the powerband the way I want to with ease. The customer service was not too bad, I had a rep that was great and I had one that was a doof. Kinda a hit and miss. But Barry Grant gets my vote.

I've looked at Bigs. GREAT carbs . . . for about $1,000 delivered. And then you have to tune it. And then you have to . . . eh, you get the picture.

Here's what I do. I've got a bulletproof all forged 500+ hp 8,500 rpm redline screamin' demon that . . . I drive to work. On RARE occasion, I may do some road course work, but, for the most part, it's going to go to work (20 miles or so) OR do some interstate runs 300-500 miles (I'm running a 3.00:1 rear for goodness sake!).

I don't street race. The car's got a baby seat! Basically, we built the motor in '93, it's got 160k on the odometer, and we MIGHT have to re-ring her this year. Same motor and everything was at the last TWO 10 year Mustang shows (30th and 40th). It's way more than I need, BUT it keeps the young kids in the ricers quiet. It's my "anti-street race" car.

Anyway, like I said, I'm a mechE, so I work on crap all day long. The LAST thing I want to do is come home to retune the carb that I tuned yesterday because the tune from the day before wasn't good. I live in West Tennessee. In one week, we can have an ice storm, a tornado, and then a heat wave. A 50 degree swing here isn't unheard of, so it's dern near impossible to "dial in" a carb.

I've heard that BG Demons are good carbs, but I've also heard their recent QC has been crumby.

I can't believe that no one makes an "easy" 351W EFI swapout. If I had a 302, this would be REALLY simple.

Bummer.

Odds are, though, as soon as I buy a carb, somebody will make a cheap EFI kit for a 351W . . . without a doubt! LOL!

What I'm looking for REALLY is a carb that doesn't get flakey on me.

I don't see why you'd need to retune the carb everytime the weather changed. Last year I was commuting in my 89 V8 Ranger with its 331-sixpack. The 3 Holley 250's kept right up with the weather. And yea, we get temp changes like you do as well. It can be 80 degrees and humid as hell one day and be in the 30's by nightfall. I put this setup on it and never touched the carbs after tuning them (mainly getting the right jets, never had to fool with anything else on them) I ran it almost daily for over a year like that.

Might also be due to a tuning problem other than the carb. Seen that happen a lot. My 68 Merc did it a few weeks ago. Took it out for a few laps around the block ( no license or insurance, so that's all the excercise it gets for now) Started popping at full throttle like it had water in the gas. Turns out the vacuum advance diaphram went south and it was a lack of timing not the carb.
