NEW CLUTCH WON'T FIT

I received my new RAM Power Grip clutch for my 1967 Mustang 289 with a 4spd Top Loader trans. I did a pre-check of the disc to the splined shaft of the trans and could only get it to go on about 1/4 in. I took the alignment tool that came with the new clutch and it fits both the new and old disc. RAM tech support said I probably have a booger on the disc, so I took a small file and went over the center section. It didn't help, so I sent the kit back to SUMMIT for an exchange. Hope the one I sent back was just machined wrong. Anybody got any ideas on what it could be if the next one doesn't fit?

Did you try rotating the clutch to see if it would fit on a different spline? I'm assuming the old clutch fit well.
I've never used a RAM brand clutch...I run a Centerforce dual friction disc...bought that 1st time I saw it advertized when they first came out...I'm in love with it. My wife is jealous.
If you grew-up when I did you destroyed daily driver clutches with a 7500 rpm power shift or you glazed semi-metallic ones by slipping them in traffic and that gave you a clutch chatter that was like having an on-off switch attached to the clutch. THAT was fun.
Changed-out so many on the BOSS 302 I could do it in under 2 hours start to finnish with nothing more than bottle jacks and non-power hand tools.

The splines on that transmission are not keyed in any special way, it should be able to go on no matter where it was lined up with the splines, as long as the splines were lined up. That being said, it may not be the clutch disc that has the problem. Did you inspect the input shaft of the transmission for burrs ? It is possible that you have a damaged input shaft. I'm not saying it wasn't the clutch, but its something else to check.

Also, make SURE you replace the throw out bearing and the pilot bearing when you swap everything out. Inspect the fork for wear and replace as needed.

check to make sure the clutch has the same number of splines, just a thought

Clutch has the same number of splines because the alignment tool that came with it fits both the new and old clutch disc. No burrs on the trans spline because the old disc slides on easily. I sent the whole kit back to Summit and am expecting the new kit today. I'll let you know if the new one works.

Received the replacement clutch from Summit on Friday. Same issue, will not slide on the trans shaft. Sent the kit back for a refund. It's off to "Quality Clutch" here in Metro Detroit to see if they can help. I got my last clutch from them and I need to take them my flywheel to get resurfaced anyway.

Got the trans in the back of my truck. Going after work to pick up the new set-up from them. They are building me a heavy duty clutch that I can beat on a little.

Picked up the new set-up from "Quality Clutch" yesterday. Disc slides on shaft just fine. Spent about 3 hours in the garage last night putting it back together and got as far as being ready to put the trans back in. Hopefully I'll finish it tonight. Owner of the clutch shop said he thinks the problem with the ram clutch was a bad batch of machined discs.

Had to have my Gorilla brother come over and help me muscle the trans in even with using a trans jack. All back together now. Just need to do the final clutch adjustment and double check everything underneath before I pull it off the jack stands and do a test drive. Guy at the clutch shop said I could beat on this one without breaking it unless I do something stupid.
