Ok, I ordered new 4.6l from a 2000 mustang with 54,000 miles on it, for my 97, whos old engine crapped out. After 2 weeks, they finally finished installing it saturday! My question is, the mechanic said not to allow the revs to go above 2 1/2 rpms for the first 1,000 miles, and I want to know if this seems normal or rather long to y'all? I had a friend who had to get her engine replaced in her 4cy 99 saturn, and they told her just not to exced 50 miles per hr, for the first 500 miles. I have a 1 year/12,000 mile warenty on it, and I'm thinking that he might have extened the break in time to cover his ass. So anyone who has any experince with this that could help me out would be greatly appreciated.

doesn't sound new to me, just don't go hard on the engine and don't wind it out for about 1000 miles, if it is completely fresh he may have put standard oil in and should've advised you that you could switch to syn after 1000 mile breakin

If it has 54,000 miles on it then it needs no break in time. If it was rebuilt then yes, take it kinda easy for the first 1000 miles or so.

I'd say 3K would be safe to not go above if the engine is new. But since you said it has 54K on it, then the rings should be seated already - you should be able to drive normally. I got about 600 miles on mine before it went on the dyno for a tune and it's holding up fine.

Thanks for the help! My car has 125,000k on it so I guess 54,000 sounded pretty new to me lol. It's got full syn mobli one in it right now, I had been running it on royal purple, but the shop didnt have any, and they told me they would just go ahead and put this in for free.

you don't have to break in that enigne at all. it's got 54k on it, think about it thats means I would be just about done breaking my car in now.

I think he also said something about the computer adjusting to the new engine, any thoughts on that?

He should get a tune at somepoint, but his PCM will learn all it's going to learn within the first 100 miles.
