New engine in, vibration during acceleration

Hey all, I have the new engine combo in and am experiencing vibration during slow rpm movement and acceleration. It is a “soft vibration” that you can feel through the car, and I can definitely feel it through the steering wheel. No odd noises though.

It seems to settle down some at higher speeds (45-55 mph). The vibration is most violent during low/medium acceleration at lower speeds (25-35 mph) and rpms (1000-2500 rpms).

When at idle or revving in neutral there is little vibration… no more than can be expected with a cammed motor.

History: I pulled my old stock bottom end motor and threw in a slightly used forged 306. It was running fine before I got it. It was balanced with the 50 oz. balancer it came with, but I threw my 50 oz. balancer on it. I installed new polyurethane motor mounts. When removing the pilot bearing from the new block it did scar the crank area some.

I have checked tranny fluid, and it is correct…. So I don’t think it’s tranny shudder. I installed it up to the same AODE tranny, driveshaft… nothing else has changed.

Where do I begin to figure this vibration out??

I had the exact same thing with mine a few years back and it turned out to be a broken/fouled spark plug. It'd be bad on light acceleration and light load but rev it and it'd almost go away. The whole engine would shake and rock back and forth while idling too. Just something to look at.

As in the vibration is being transferred through the body more now?? It seems pretty excessive though, the wheel will shake pretty good ... like having warped rotors, etc.

Didn't realize it was that bad. But you said its at idle...so its not rotors.

Like EAS said, check the spark plugs to make sure there all good and firing. Also if its affecting the steering wheel, make sure nothings rubbing against the steering column.

:OT: Is this the EagleAutoSports thats on MM&FF forum? (Denne)

Well I turned the driveshaft and seemed to help slightly. But I drove it around tonight and it is a RPM vibration I think.

I would be driving 20-30ish around 1300 rpms and would have the vibrations... then punch it up around 2200 rpms and it smooth out drastically. The same would happen on the highway.

This makes me wonder then if I should try swapping the balancer that was on the longblock back on then eh? As in the machine shop balanced the engine with that balancer only... so I can't use mine.

First, yeah it's me. I made the jump over to a forum where everyone seems to know what they're talking about. :hail2:
I would think the other balancer should go on it since that's the one it used for the balancing. Factory balancers can break inside and throw everything off while looking like nothing is wrong with it.

I swapped balancers, and that seems to have taken care of the bad vibrations. Now I only have some vibration at idle speeds, and it goes away once I'm into the gas some. I'm assuming now that the slight vibration is caused from my poly motor mounts.

Thanks for everyone's help.
