New Fox, But A Few Issues

I just bought an 88 GT the other day, crappy paint, but all straight, has bbk exhaust x pipe, MAF conversion. New suspension all the way around. it also came with bald tires on ugly pony wheels, but i have already put some wheels and tires on it. It also came with a stack of receipts...

But i am having an issue with the fuel gauge, It was working fine when i bought the car and the day after, but then it went all the way above full, then i shut the car off and it went back down to where the fuel level was. I drove about 60 miles through the canyon and freeway to pick up some wheels, and it did it again! this time it won't go back to the current fuel level.

What could this be?

a bad ground by any chance? if so, where is the ground for the fuel gauge located?

I had an 87 that did that randomly for a couple years. I sold the car before I figured out what the cause was.

I'm also no help, but my 95 right now sometimes has the temp gauge go all the way up passed the red and the gas goes down to less than a quarter tank, I figure it's a loose ground but I don't know where to start looking.

In the same car I had the battery ground stripped and burnt and it caused all four of my gauges to fly everywhere, my turn signals relay would my temperature gauge and such.

So my guess, bad ground. But i'm far from an electrical expert.

Well, when my tank got to about a quarter it worked again... I think that the float or sending unit is bad.

Could be the voltage regulator on the back of the instrument cluster as well.

I have this issue also, swapped out gauge clusters with another one, I'm gonna be putting in a new sending unit to see if that fixes it.

You'll want to look into two things, either replacing the motors bushings (costs 8 dollars or so at a car store to buy them), you just have to disassemble the motor and put the new ones in.

Or buy a new/used motor. Listen to see if you can hear the motor turning or working when you press the button, if you can't hear it, it's defiantly broken.

Disassemble first before you waste the money on buying them though to make sure there shredded like in the first picture.
