I was calling around and most shops i called said above 500 to install new gears in the diff? I was reading online and people were saying around 300? This a joke or am i getting ripped off?

For a foxbody with drum brakes we typcially charge 250$ for labor plus the cost of parts. If installing C clip eliminators the labor will be more.
It's hard to say what exactly you are getting for that 500$. If that includes all the parts then you are not too far off.

More important than how much a shop will charge is how well a shop does the job. I would ask around for who knows how to install gears properly so they don't howl, whine, or self destruct. Entrusting your car to a shop is not a job you award to the lowest bidder. That being said, labor is anywhere from 250-350 for this job. Also, only use Ford gears, the Ford upgraded install kit, new seals, and Ford friction modifier. LMRS sells a kit with everything for about $260
