New Heads - Rattle NOT Fixed!

Wait...seems like some are talking about idler pulley and some chain tensioner? School me! Oh wise ones! Chain tensioner is timing chains right?

Bout to trade this in on a quad cab dakota....at least it'll pull my boat. But I'll lose big bucks on upsidedownness.

does the sound emit from the crankcase area? The idler pulley and belt tensioner are one in the same - the tensioner is the whole assembly that keeps the serpentine belt taut, and the pulley is the dummy wheel you are talking about. It is possible that went south and is rattling, but if it turns out the sound comes from the crank area, thats a much more grave issue.

Hotmustang, I was just throwing the PTV idea out there, just to give some justification as to why installing new heads/cams might still not solve the problem (if they were the problem to begin with, which it doesnt seem like).

Doc, I think the chain tensioner can also go bad in time, but where your car is so new, I'd be hesitant to say that is it. It, however, should not be overlooked as a possibility

I doubt it's a bottom end engine problem liek a spun bearing. As you said the engine would be toast now.

I would look at the clutch/flywheel. see if you can feel anything in the clutch pdeal when it does it. or get it up on a lift and remove the cable sheild and listen in there.

we were all waiting for you to come in and school us :hail2:

I had a similar noise also.....turned out one of my cats crackes and under a slight load it would vibrate and scare the crap out of me! I took it to several places and heard heads....idler pulley....crank bearings.......exhaust leak........timing chain..........well when i was investigating it....turned out that I had hit a speedbump pretty hard and cracked or smashed one of my cats...wouldn't hurt to check!

Cats was my first thought too 9 months ago...and Fords....until I put an O/R prochamber on and it still rattled.

I'm gonna call Ford here in a few minutes once I wake up and have my mental bearings. I'll mention some of these ideas to them. Heck, if they want they can just rebuild the entire car for me. Or trade up for an 07 black mustang gt.

Ok, sorry to keep driving this into the ground. Come to find out, I got an engine guy that lives across the street from me. Is a CarX tech and has been building engines forever. Is starting to become somewhat of an "engine guy" in the community for mustangs and muscle cars.

Anyways, he listens to my car and says I have rod rattle. Could this be rod rattle????
