New heads?

Hello guys I'm new to this site because I just bought my stang. I used to be a member or broncozone cause I own a full-size 95xlt and this site seems to have a similar set-up to the way that site was, so I went with what seems familiar when looking for a good forum =P Anyway I just got a 2001 GT. I have only had the car for a day and the first time I opened her up she threw a valve. I'm thinking of just replacing both heads since the car does have 90 some thousand miles on it and it needs an overhaul obviously. While looking for new heads I decided on direct oem replacements from ford but I was thinking about trying to fit 4v heads from the 03-04 cobra. I'm not even sure if this is possible, I am new to mustangs and I'm just trying to build the motor to be the most solid it can be at almost 100k so I can do other internals like cams etc. since I have your "basic" bolt-on's done to the car already. Any advice on this topic would be great I'm open to any ideas I'm really just trying to look at my options at this point, I'm using my bronco as a daily driver until I can sell it so it's no rush to fix the stang so please anyone who has replaced heads, valvetrain, cams etc. please let me hear your ideas. Thank you!:nice:

u can do the 4v swap but it is xpensive. i would say to wait till trickflow comes out with their new heads at the end of march early april cause they flow more than the 4v cobra heads if your not in too much of a rush. and they are a lot cheaper than the cobra heads.

there are alot of things to consider here though. Why are you looking to get 4v heads?? what are your plans for the car??

you can replace your heads with another set of used 2v p.i. heads. That would be the cheapest route.

you can replace your heads with some ported and polished 2v p.i. castings like patriots. way more expensive.

you can replace your heads with some SVO heads which are now known as just the FRPP heads, recently went down in price a whole hell of alot.

going 4v is a cool project, and is totally possible, but alot of people will agree with me on this that wth the money you spend buying everything for the complete swap, you already have enough to replace your heads with 2v p.i.'s and buy a blower

the trickflow heads are going to be really nice and they allegedly outflow 03-04 4v heads, but i mean for $2000 for heads alone, thats a feasible option only if youre looking for some SERIOUS power

if your plans are just to get the car running and make some decent power down the road, your best option is to either just replace them with more 2v p.i.'s or find some ported and polished ones, and use all the money you would've used trying to get a 4v swap in on a blower and stuff.

good luck man

Thanks for the advice

I think I'll stick to some polished 2v's. You mentioned a blower and those are actually my plans for the car. I'm looking to put a whipple on it in the future and run only about 8-10 pounds, just for some good vette killin power. If I go with polished 2v's what other hardware should I upgrade to run a blower? Also if I just grab some used 2v's off another stang would they withstand the power of a blower? Thanks for any advice.

yea you can grab a set of used 2v heads and use them for a blower setup. the limiting factor on our engines are the rods and pistons, not so much anything else. The block, as ive seen it mentioned here, is good for 1000rwhp, the crank is also good for a good amount of power, its usually the rods that are first to go.

if youre planning on doing 400-450 rwhp, then you should be fine with sotck internals as long as you have the proper fuel set-up and a good dyno tune to keep your AFR within acceptable limits.

although its certainly ok to put on the blower and push those power levels, its always a gamble depending on the current state of engine, its tear and wear, etc. Some people on here have achieved 500rwhp+ with the stock block and internals and have kept going strong, while others have spit out rods/pistons at 390rwhp, which goes to show not all tunes or engines are made equal.

If you want to significantly improve your chance of surviving with boost, you just need a good tune, good fuel supply, OR you could just replace the stock internals with forged ones which is more expensive, but will allow you to push over the 450rwhp mark.

for now, you can just replace the heads with any 2v p.i.'s that are in good shape, and if your engine is assembled right, it should be fine with a blower as long as the tune is good and the fuel supply is abundant.

Whipples are firggin sick, although i cant say ive seen to many 2v's with em, i usually see Kenne Bell's, etc.

good luck with the build man :D
