All done up except the engine. I know, backwards. 351C 4v heads, 4 spd hurst, 3.91.

I would like some input as what to do with my second engine I have just sitting around waiting for a project. It is another 351C 4v. Any suggestions where to start reading? 400-500hp is the goal.

Thanks, Dan.

408 stroker kit, CHI aluminum 3v heads or if the budget is a little lacking, a nice set of cast iron Aussie 2v heads, crane or comp hydraulic roller cam conversion with around .550 lift and 224-230 @.050 duration, e'brock performer air gap or blue thunder intake and a good ignition system. headers also, FPA has some really nice clevie headers. i'd also look into a around a 750cfm demon carb, you can proably go with a double pumper since you have a 4 speed and do well but a vacuum secondary will be fine.

Gear Vendors make a OD that replaces the output shaft housing for a toploader. It's pretty pricey, but I don't think it would be that much more than converting it to a late model 5 speed unless you have a buddy that has a new unit that will take 600HP/TQ that owes you money that will bolt right in, yada, yada, yada. I just said that because some shmoe will get on here saying you can do it for under $500. I'm comparing new vs. new and toploaders are pretty beefy, I don't know what the comparable 5 speed as far as strength is (TKO?). I believe David Kee has the GV unit for a toploader. I do think a GV conversion will hold it's value better than a late model 5 speed as it was designed for it.

A good place to start reading is the Network 54 Cleveland forums.

If your 4V heads are closed chambered, they would be great for a build. 400-500 hp should be easy. You don't have to buy a different set of heads. 4V closed chamber heads are among the best cast iron heads ever designed. 2V 302C heads are good, but 4V CC heads better for a strong build. Of course a more advanced and recently designed set of CHI aluminum heads are superior to either - after dominating several Engine Masters competitions in a row, that is obvious.

Here are some top resources for Clevelands. Head porting, custom cams, you name it, these guys know it.

Thanks for all of the input and suggestions. I don't know if they are CC heads but will find out soon. I will follow up on this thread as I go and learn. I've got a lot to learn, but luckily have an uncle who is a gear head and his kids are the same. Time to spend some 'family time' once I get this started! He is the one that painted the car back in '93.

1 year later and I've just dropped the engine off to get cleaned up and checked for cracks. 500 hp is the goal. If you have any pointers to suggest to the build, let me know.

Do you have goals other than just the peak hp? Is it street exclusively, 1/4 miler, road racer, what rpm range, etc? What is your current planned build?

edit: one thing - don't have them bore any more than necessary to clean up the cylinders. Keep all the meat you can in the cylinder walls.

I am aiming for mid to low 12's and 115+ at the lights on 91 pump gas. I really don't know which way to have this 351 taken: headers or not, what kind of heads or stock, and a whole bunch of other numbers that my novice self don't understand. I have 3.91s on a 4 spd. I was thinking about the 408 stroker kit that I've read about. I just don't know what else is needed to get the power out without sacrificing longevity.
