Hi, was searching and can't really find what I was looking for. And I think this is where the post belongs.
First of all I just purchased an 92 5.0 lx automatic.
When I first drove it I loved it till a gtp beat me. So I need some help on what to do or fix to feel the full power of this car, it has bbk headers with flowmasters exhaust and an cai. That's it. I noticed the tranny shifts way to soon and I can't even manually shift it except for 1st and 3rd gear. This is my daily driver so any help or advise is much appriciated. Thanks.

First, welcome.

Having owned a couple of automatics, I can give you two bits of advice. First, 3.73 or 4.10 rear end gears should be your first modification. This will GREATLY improve your driving experience by improving your accelleration. Second, there is a little thing called "the AOD shuffle" that allows you to maually change gears.

At a stop, drop the shifter into low.
Accellerate briskly.
When you want to shift to second, slide the shifter back up into "D" for just a second, then drop it back to "1".
The transmission will now hold second gear until you move the shifter up into "D" again for third.

NOTE: This is hard on your transmission and should not be normal practice.

But, for the random stoplight blast, or for track use, this will allow you to get the most out of your car's performance.

Well said except he did mention this is his daily driver so depending on your daily commute I would take that into consideration when you make your gear selection. Probably the best bang for the buck on a stock car.

I had an Auto in my 90LX and had to do the 1-D-1 Shuffle. That's how you'll have to manually shift it. Later I switched to a full race Art Carr Tranny and never had to do that again, just put it in drive and mashed it.

And if you want that AOD to live a longer life I would recomend a trans cooler too, I used to do the 1-2-1 shift shuffle all the time with it and that trans still worked great with 90,000 miles on it before I swapped it out for a 5 speed Tremec. I believe that Trans cooler had a big part of that.
That trans also had a Transgo shift kit in it and a TCI 2400 stall converter. Plus the 3:73 gears were a big improvement over the stock 2:73's it had.

I did not know about the 1-2-1 shift. That's good to know I will not be doing it often only when I wanna have fun. The gears I have read that 3.73 would be best for the auto and shouldn't affect the gas. Also what about a shift kit? and a tuner? Maybe underdrive pulleys?

3.73 will affect gas some I imagine. I can't say for an auto (which I have) b/c I still have 2.73 gears, I assume that's what's in there but my dad has a '95 w the 5spd and when he switched from 2.73 to 3.73 it raised hwy cruising rpms 500 or more and it feels like it needs another gear, you don't hardly need to downshift to pass. Oh and 1st gear is not that great when it comes to running full throttle, it runs out of rpm's before it's making any speed. But crusing around town is easier since having the lower gears. One more thing, that gtp prob has more horsepower than stock/bolt on foxes, the 1998-2003 had 240 and in '04 they went up to 260. Not sure like the hp to weight ratio our cars vs that one but they're prob gonna walk on us mostly stock fellas.

Yeah it was a close one. He still pulled on me. But I think gears and it should turn the tables.
I think 3.55 would be good for all around driving. And since it's aod a shift kit is on order with the gears.

Me and a friend installed 373's and a SCT tuner from american muscle on his 2000 automatic.. It made a very noticable difference in all the shift points in the trans. and the gears really woke up the car. This could be an option for you.

Don't invest any money in the automatic trans.

Trans cooler, shift kit, torque converter etc will add up quickly.
You shift it manually, it's not if it's going to break, it's when.

Put every dime of your money towards a t5 conversion.
Probably take a full second off your quarter mile time, not to mention bring the fun factor up 1000%.
First time you drive it with a 5 speed it will feel like you bought a new car.

A proper trans, converter, and gear will transform the car. The factory trans & converter could probably use some freshening or replacement anyway since the car is 20 years old. DYNAMIC and PA both make excellent drop in replacements which aren't too costly. I personally wouldn't go any smaller than a 4.10 gear. With that taken care of, the car will run deep in the 13s with decent suspension and drag radials. That's enough to polish off the GTP unless it has been modded.
