New MGW Shifter (now w/ pics)

Ok, Santa brought me a MGW shifter this weekend....just got home and its going on tomorrow. Any tips for the install. I will read the directions, of course, and have taken my shifter off once already to track down a leak...so it was pretty easy doing that. Also, I noticed the directions said the 3650 has internal stops on the tranny...and to not use the stop bolts...anyone have some info about this? The 04 does have 3650 right?

Also, walked away with about 100 bucks. I know I can save it, but the next mod I want is a cat-back...so its far from that amount. I've thought about getting some race pedals, shorty attennae and some letter inserts for the back....but I'd rather get a "real" mod if I can. Anyone have any suggestions for 100 bucks??

Oh, get this...my wife was going to get me the Steeda cat-back I'm wanting, but when she went to order it fro Steeda...they wouldn't ship to a different address...and she didn't want it to come to our house and ruin the suprise...so she got the shifter instead...man oh man oh man! What a difference huh!

What the deal w/ the mgw?? IT used to be blue and red handles, now I see it's only an orange? What did they compromise to save from tooling costs?

Huh....what difference does it make what color it is and why would that mean a compromise? From what I've heard, the orange one is better than the old ones.

The orange one combines the older two handles into one. Both are awesome, neither lack in quality. The new one just makes it so you dont have to switch handles.

I have a red Handled MGW and want to try out a blue and orange handle to see if i like the feel better

just remember the MGW needs to break-in for a few days, so when you try it first don't think it'll be stiff all the time

You don't need the stops. Just remove them. The 3650 has internal stops. If you leave them in and don't adjust the correctly you'll damage the trans.
Orange handle was a compromise between an extremely short shifter and a longer one. Great shifter. I'd order a gasket set from Cobra Bob for the shifter. ABout $7 and it will eliminate jst about all vibration and noise.

the biggest pain was bolting down the inner boot plate to the console. the 2 inner bolts were set in a such a way that i sometimes got 2 clicks from my ratchet...AHHHHHH.

Is there that much of a diff. between the old "red" handle and the new "orange" handle? Evrything else is the same correct? I drove a car w/ an mgw and red handle and thought it to be MUCH quieter and a bit shorter shifting than my tri-ax, but not enough to spend 200.00 on a new shifter...

The install is pretty straight forward. You do not need the shift stops as they are internal in the 3650 tranny. I didn't put them on mine. It will feel pretty stiff to start but will loosen up to a comfortable level really soon.

Depending on the mileage on your tranny fluid, think about changing it. Adds about 15 minutes to the job. I just did my MGW yesterday and added Royal Purple. Easy to drain, then just fill it once you get the old one off.

Also, be patient with getting the old one off once the bolts are out. The original permatex on their held pretty well and took a lot of side to side yanking on the shifter.

25k miles on car....time for tranny fluid change yet ya think? Not sure if I can wait....been waiting 3 days to put this on...maybe I'll just change the tranny fluid another time! The bug is biting really hard, first real mod to my Stang!

I changed my fluid to Royal Purple and I was only at 9k miles yesterday when I changed the shifter. At 25k I would consider changing it. Doesn't add hardly anytime. Just need a run to the parts store.

Here are some pics of the install. Test drove - love it! A little stiff, but its great. I've seen lots of references to more noise, I hear a little bit of an "airy" or "hissing" type of noise, and also the shifts seem a bit notchier, almost like its clicks in place....normal? Also, left the second inner boot off, maybe that would help with noise.

hey i need some stop bolts! anyone willing to get rid of theirs. since so many of you arent using them i'd like to have them. i just bent the 1-2 shift fork tore out the 1-2 syncros and the blocking rings and sliders. i'd love to have a set of those bolts if you dont want em

I have a 2000 GT w/ the T45, so i don't have internal stops. I'm gonna pick up the MGW shifter in about 2 weeks and want to know how to adjust them. To i just put the shifter into say 1st gear and when it engages, set the stop there? I've also heard to engage and set it, then back off a turn or two. Any suggestions? Thanks guys

Welcome to MGW club. You'll love it. Don't be concerned with the fluid .Leave it alone. Borla cat's are cheaper than the Steeda.Steeda's are Borla.Also, 1 boot is correct.
